சினிமாவில் ஹீரோக்கள் அழகாக ஹேண்ட்ஸமாக நடித்தால்தான் எல்லோருக்கும் பிடிக்கும் என்ற நிலை மாறிவருகிறது. சாக்லேட் பாயாக, ரொமான்ஸ் ஹீரோவாக நடித்த ஹீரோக்கள் கூடகதாபாத்திரத்திற்கு ஏற்ப தங்களை மாற்றிகொண்டு நடிக்கின்றனர். முன்பெல்லாம் திரைப்படத்திற்காக மொட்டை போட்டு நடிப்பதுதான் மிகப்பெரிய விசயமாக ஊடகங்களில் எழுதப்படும்.

12 பி படத்தில் இருந்து சாக்லேட் ஹீரோவாக ரொமான்ஸ் நாயகனாகவே நடித்தவர் ஷாம். ஒரு படத்தில் வில்லனாக கூட நடித்தார். இப்போது 6 மெழுகுவர்த்திகள் படத்தில் தன்னை முற்றிலும் அடையாளம் தெரியாத வகையில் கண்கள் வீங்கி நீள முடி வளர்த்து நடித்திருந்தார் ஷாம். இவரது கதாபாத்திரம் பெருமளவில் பேசப்பட்டது.

ஜீவாவின் அறிமுகமும் ரொமான்ஸ் கதாபாத்திரம்தான். ஆனால் ஈ, கற்றது தமிழ், என வரிசையாக வித்தியாசமாக கதாபாத்திரங்களில் நடித்து தன்னை வித்தியாசமான ஹீரோவாக நிரூபித்தார்.

அழகான சாக்லேட் ஹீரோதான் ஆர்யா. நான் கடவுள், அவன் இவன் படங்களில் அந்த கதாபாத்திரங்களுக்கு ஏற்ப நீளமுடி வளர்த்தும், மண்டையை செதுக்கியும் நடித்திருந்தார்.

மீரா, புதியமன்னர்கள் போன்ற படங்களில் ரொமான்ஸ் ஹீரோவாக துறுதுறுப்பாக நடித்த விக்ரமிற்கு மறுவாழ்வு கிடைத்த படம் சேது. அதில் தன்னையே உருக்கி உருத்தெரியாமல் நடித்திருந்தார். தொடர்ந்து பிதாமகன், அந்நியன், என பல கதாபாத்திரங்களில் தன்னையே மாற்றிகொண்டிருந்தார்.
காதல், ரொமான்ஸ் காட்சிகளில் நடித்த விஷால் அவன் இவன் படத்தில் மாறு கண் கொண்ட திருநங்கையாக நடித்திருந்தார்.

ஆறடிக்கு மேல் உயரம் கொண்ட ஹீரோ சரத்குமார் காஞ்சனா படத்தில் யாருமே எதிர்பார்க்காத அளவில் திருநங்கையாக நடித்திருந்தார். சூரியன் படத்தில் அவர் மொட்டையாக நடித்தது அப்போது பரபரப்பாக பேசப்பட்டது. அதேபோல திருநங்கை கதாபாத்திரமும் பரபரப்பாக பேசப்பட்டது.

அழகான அஜீத் பல திரைப்படங்களில் விதவிதமான கெட்டப்களில் நடித்திருந்தாலும், சிட்டிசன் படத்தில் போட்டிருந்த அனைத்து கெட்அப்களுமே ரசிகர்களிடம் பாராட்டை பெற்றது.

கதாபாத்திரத்திற்கு ஏற்ப தன்னை மாற்றிகொண்டு நடிப்பதில் இன்றைய நடிகர்களுக்கு முன்னோடி கமல்தான். அவ்வை சண்முகி, தசாவதாரம் போன்ற படங்களில் கமலின் வேடங்கள் அத்தனை பொருத்தமாக அமைந்திருந்தாக ரசிகர்கள் தெரிவித்தனர்.

இந்திய சர்வதேச திரைப்பட விழாவை துவங்கி வைப்பாரா ரஜினிகாந்த்?

கோவாவில் நடக்கவிருக்கும் இந்திய சர்வதேச திரைப்பட விழாவைத் துவங்கி வைக்க வேண்டும் என்று ரஜினிகாந்துக்கு கோரிக்கை விடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. 

கடந்த 2004ம் ஆண்டில் இருந்து கோவாவில் இந்திய சர்வதேச திரைப்பட விழா நடந்து வருகிறது. கடந்த ஆண்டு விழாவை பாலிவுட் நடிகர் அக்ஷய் குமார் துவங்கி வைத்தார்.

 இந்நிலையில் இந்த ஆண்டு விழா வரும் நவம்பர் மாதம் 20ம் தேதி துவங்குகிறது. இந்த விழாவை துவங்கி வைக்குமாறு ரஜினிகாந்துக்கு அழைப்பு விடுக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. 

இது குறித்து விழா ஏற்பாட்டாளரான என்டர்டெயின்மென்ட் சொசைட்டி ஆப் கோவாவின் துணை தலைவர் விஷ்ணு வாக் கூறுகையில், ரஜினிகாந்துக்கு அழைப்பிதழ் அனுப்பியுள்ளோம். அவர் தரப்பில் இருந்து ஒப்புதலுக்காக காத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறோம். 

அவர் இந்த விழாவை துவங்கி வைத்தால் அது கௌரவம். இந்த மாத இறுதி வரை ரஜினியின் ஒப்புதலுக்காக காத்திருப்போம் என்றார். ரஜினிகாந்த் விழாவில் கலந்து கொள்வார் என்று விழா ஏற்பாட்டாளர்கள் நம்புகிறார்கள்.

இசையமைப்பாளர் கட்டிய ஆடம்பர பங்களா...

இசையமைக்க வெளிநாடு சென்றால் தான் முடியும் என அடம் பிடித்து தயாரிப்பாளர் செலவில் இலவச வெளிநாட்டு சுற்றுலா சென்று வரும் இசையமைப்பாளர் இவர். 

சமீபத்தில் இவர் சென்னையில் ஒரு புது வீடு கட்டியுள்ளார். இசையைப் பார்ப்பதற்காக அவரது திரை உலக நண்பர்கள் சிலர் புது வீட்டிற்கு சென்றுள்ளனர். 

வீட்டைப் பார்த்து விட்டு, சுமார் 10 கிரவுண்ட் பரப்பளவில் கட்டப் பட்ட அது வீடே அல்ல அரண்மனை என வாய் பிளக்கிறார்களாம் நண்பர்கள். வீட்டைப் போலவே, கார்கள் விஷயத்திலும் இசையின் ரசனையே தனி தானாம். ஹம்மர் கார் உட்பட நான்கைந்து வெளிநாட்டுக் கார்கள் உள்ளதாம் இசையிடம். 

இந்த இசையிடம் சில ட்யூன்களே உள்ளதால், எல்லாப் படத்திலும் ஒரே மாதிரியான பாடல்களையே கேட்க முடிவதாக பலரும் புலம்புகிறார்களாம் - திரையுலகிலேயே. ஆனால் இசையோ கவலைப்படுவதாகவே உள்ளதாம். 

மேலும் ரொம்ப ரொம்ப லேட்டாக பாட்டுக்களைப் போட்டுத் தருவதால் பலர் இவரிடமிருந்து விலகவும் ஆரம்பித்து விட்டனராம். இருந்தாலும் கவலைப்படாத இசை.. தமிழ் கைவிட்டால் என்ன தெலுங்கில் தேட்டையைப் போடுவேனே என்று மிக்கி மவுஸ் கணக்கில் பேசிச் சிரிக்கிறாராம்....!

தீவிரவாத இயக்கமான லஷ்கர் இ தொய்பாவின் புதிய தளமாக இலங்கை உருவெடுத்து வருகிறது என்று தி சண்டே கார்டியன் ஏடு தெரிவித்துள்ளது. இலங்கையில் இருந்து கடல்வழியே இந்தியாவுக்குள் ஊடுருவி தீவிரவாதிகள் தாக்குதல் நடத்தக் கூடும் என்று தொடர்ந்து எச்சரிக்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது. 

இந்நிலையில் தி சண்டே கார்டியன் ஏடு, நேபாளத்தைப் போல இலங்கையை லஷ்கர் இ தொய்பா தீவிரவாத இயக்கம் தமது புதிய தளமாக மாற்றி வருகிறது என்று தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

இந்தியாவிலும், ஐரோப்பாவிலும் தாக்குதலைகளை நடத்துவதற்கான ஒன்று கூடும் இடமாக இலங்கையை லஷ்கர் இ தொய்பா மாற்றியுள்ளது.

கந்தகார் விமானக் கடத்தலின் போதுதான் நேபாளத்தை தீவிரவாதிகள் எப்படி தளமாக பயன்படுத்துகின்றனர் என்பதே இந்தியாவுக்கு தெரியவந்தது. அண்மைக்காலமாக நேபாளத்தில் தீவிரவாதிகள் தொடர்ந்து கைது செய்யப்பட்டு இந்தியாவுக்கு கொண்டுவருவதால் அவர்கள் இலங்கையை புகலிடமாக்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கின்றனர் என்று கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.

தொடரும் சீமாந்திரா போராட்டம்! இயல்பு வாழ்க்கை முடக்கம்!! ஜனாதிபதி ஆட்சி அமல்?

 தெலுங்கானா அமைக்கப்படும் என்ற மத்திய அரசின் அறிவிப்பால் 2 மாத காலமாக போராட்டம் நடைபெற்று வந்தது. இந்நிலையில் தெலுங்கானாவுக்கு மத்திய அமைச்சரவை ஒப்புதல் கொடுத்தது. இதனால் உச்சகட்ட போராட்டங்கள் நடைபெற்று வருகின்றன. 

அத்துடன் ஹைதராபாத்தில் ஒய்.எஸ்.ஆர். காங்கிரஸ் தலைவர் ஜெகன் மோகன் ரெட்டியும் டெல்லியில் தெலுங்கு தேசம் தலைவர் சந்திரபாபு நாயுடுவும் காலவரையற்ற உண்ணாவிரதப் போராட்டத்தை நடத்தி வருகின்றனர். இப்போராட்டத்தில் மின்சாரம், போக்குவரத்து, கல்வித்துறை ஊழியர்கள் என அனைத்துத் தரப்பினரும் ஈடுபட்டு வருகின்றனர்.

மின்சார வாரிய ஊழியர்கள் காலவரையற்ற போராட்டத்தில் குதித்துள்ளதால் சீமாந்திரா பிரதேசமே இருளில் மூழ்கியுள்ளது. மருத்துவமனைகள், ரயில்சேவைகள் மிகக் கடுமையாக பாதிக்கப்பட்டு முடக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.
சீமாந்திராவின் 13 மாவட்டங்களின் பெரும்பாலான பகுதி இருளில் மூழ்கியுள்ளது.

சீமாந்திராவின் விஜயவாடா, திருப்பதி மற்றும் விசாகப்பட்டினம் விமான நிலையங்கள் தற்போது பேக்அப் மின்சாரம் மூலமே இயங்கி வருகின்றன. இதே நிலைமை தொடர்ந்து நீடித்தால் விமான நிலையங்கள் மூடப்படும் அபாயம் இருக்கிறது.

விஜயநகரத்தில் ஞாயிற்றுக்கிழமை முதல் ஊரடங்கு உத்தரவு அமலில் இருக்கிறது. இன்று காலை 7 மணி முதல் 8 மணி வரை மட்டும் இந்த ஊரடங்கு தளர்த்தப்பட்டது. அத்துடன் கலவரத்தில் ஈடுபடுவோரை கண்டதும் சுட உத்தரவும் பிறப்பிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

சீமாந்திராவில் தற்போதைய உச்சகட்ட போராட்டம் தொடர்ந்தும் நீடித்தால் ஆந்திராவில் ஜனாதிபதி ஆட்சியை அமல்படுத்த வேண்டிய இக்கட்டான நிலைக்கு மத்திய அரசு தள்ளப்படும். அதைத் தவிர போராட்டத்தை ஒடுக்க வேறு எந்த ஒருவாய்ப்பு இல்லை என்றும் கூறப்படுகிறது.

அதுவும் ஆந்திராவில் காங்கிரஸ்தான் ஆளும் கட்சி. மாநில காங்கிரஸ் அரசை மத்தியில் ஆளும் காங்கிரஸ் அரசு டிஸ்மிஸ் செய்யும் போது முதல்வர் கிரண்குமார் ரெட்டி தனிக் கட்சி தொடங்க வேண்டிய நிலைக்கும் தள்ளப்படுவார். 

இதனால் சீமாந்திரா விவகாரம் காங்கிரசுக்கு இடியாப்ப சிக்கலை உருவாக்கியுள்ளது.

ப.சிதம்பரத்தின் ஆட்சேபனையை தூக்கி எறிந்த அமைச்சரவை நியமனக் குழு

மத்திய நிதியமைச்சர் ப.சிதம்பரத்தின் கடுமையான ஆட்சேபனையை பிரதமர் மன்மோகன் சிங் தலைமையிலான அமைச்சரவை நியமனக் குழு நிராகரித்துள்ளது.

 ப.சிதம்பரத்தின் எதிர்ப்பையும் மீறி, இந்திய அடிப்படைக் கட்டமைப்பு நிதி நிறுவனத்தின் தலைவர் மற்றும் நிர்வாக இயக்குநராக எஸ்.பி. நய்யார் நியமிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளார். ப.சிதம்பரத்தை இந்த நியமனம் பெரும் அதிருப்திக்குள்ளாக்கியுள்ளதாக கூறப்படுகிறது. 

லண்டநைச் சேர்ந்த ஈக்விட்டி நிறுவனமான 3ஐ என்ற நிறுவனத்தின் பங்குதாரரான தீபக் பக்லாவை இந்தப் பதவிக்கு நியமிக்கலாம் என்று பரிந்துரைத்திருந்தார் ப.சிதம்பரம். ஆனால் அதை நியமனக் குழு ஏற்காமல் நய்யாரை நியமித்துள்ளது. இதுகுறித்து அதிகாரி ஒருவர் கூறுகையில், அமைச்சரவை நியமனக் குழு, நய்யாரின் பெயருக்கு ஒப்புதல் அளித்துள்ளது. விரைவில் இதுதொடர்பான அறிவிப்பு வெளியாகும் என்றார். 

நய்யார் தற்போது ஐஐஎப்சிஎல் நிறுவனத்தின் நிர்வாக இயக்குநர் மற்றும் தலைமை செயலதிகாரியாக இருந்து வருகிறார். இது அரசு நிதி நிறுவனம் ஆகும். மேலும் ஸ்டேட் பாங்க் ஆப் இந்தியாவின் துணை நிர்வாக இயக்குநராகவும் இவர் இருந்துள்ளார். இவரை இப்பதவிக்கு நியமிக்க வேண்டாம் என்று கோரி கடந்த ஆகஸ்ட் மாதம் பிரதமருக்கு கடிதம் எழுதியிருந்தார் ப.சிதம்பரம். 

அதில், தீபக் பக்லாவை இப்பதவிக்கு பரிசீலிக்குமாறு கோரியிருந்தார். ஆனால் பக்லாவை ஒதுக்கி விட்டு, நய்யாரை நியமித்துள்ளது அமைச்சரவை நியமனக் குழு. பிரதமரின் அதிகாரம் குறித்து எதிர்க்கட்சிகள் சரமாரியாக விமர்சனம் செய்து வரும் நிலையில் இந்த முடிவை பிரதமர் தலைமையிலான அமைச்சரவைக் குழு எடுத்திருப்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

Kamal Hassan-Ramesh Aravind Project To Take Off In November

It is a known fact that Tamil superstar Kamal Hassan and Kannada actor-director Ramesh Aravind has teamed up again for a bilingual flick, which will be made in Kannada and Tamil. The hit combination of Rama Shama Bhama has joined their hands after seven years. Kamal Hassan, who was in Bangalore last week has confirmed the same. The actor was in the city for the promotion of his forthcoming movie Vishwaroopam 2. 

He also expressed his happiness for working with Ramesh Aravind, for a Kannada movie. Now, latest we hear that director Ramesh has confirmed that the bilingual movie will take off in November. Speaking to leading daily Ramesh said, "Now that Kamalji has wrapped up Vishwaroopam 2, and I haven't signed any Kannada film, we can concentrate on this project, which will take off in November." 

He also said that he will not be acting in the movie, but he concentrates only on the direction part. Ramesh, who has acted in more than 40 films in Tamil language, will be debuting as the director with the movie. It is said that along with Kannada and Tamil the movie will also be made in Hindi, and the Tamil version of the movie is titled as Uthama Villan.

Ramesh said, "Every time Kamalji and I work together, we have a rollicking time. We think alike and are open to new ideas."

"We welcome improvisations on the set. As a director, half my job is accomplished because Kamal sir is such a seasoned actor," Ramesh added.

Talking about their friendship, Ramesh Aravind said, " I'll never take advantage of my friendship with him. We're thorough professionals and tread this ground very carefully."

Ramesh also said, "When we did Rama Shama Bhama, Kamalji said it was the longest party of his life. That's how I intend to keep it this time, too."

Kamal Haasan's next after Vishwaroopam 2

The latest we hear on Kamal Haasan's next project, to be directed by Ramesh Aravind, is that it will be shot in Karnataka. On Saturday, at an event in Bangalore, the actor said, "I have always been telling Ramesh Aravind that we should do bilinguals now, so that we are able to reach out to all of south India. We are planning to shoot our next film in Karnataka."


Kamal, who has completed the shooting schedule of Vishwaroopam 2, also said that he had made the statement about "leaving the country" in the wake of initial ban of Vishwaroopam earlier this year out of anguish. "I will not take back that word. If I am threatened or troubled again as an artist, I can leave the country. But can the country leave me?" he asked.

மோடி போஸ்டரில் ரஜினி ஏன்? - கமல் காரசாரமான பேட்டி @ த ஹிந்து தமிழ்

தெலுங்கானா மாநிலம் உருவாக்க எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவித்து சீமாந்திராவில் 3வது நாளாக வன்முறை போராட்டங்கள் வெடித்துள்ளன. சீமாந்திரா முழுவதும் மின்சாரம் துண்டிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. தெலுங்கானாவுக்கு எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவித்து 70 நாட்களாக அமைதி வழி போராட்டங்கள் நடைபெற்று வருகின்றன.

 ஆனால் மத்திய அமைச்சரவை தெலுங்கானாவுக்கு ஒப்புதல் தெரிவித்த நிலையில் கடந்த 3 நாட்களாக பல இடங்களில் வன்முறை வெடித்துள்ளன. இந்த போராட்டத்தில் 30 ஆயிரம் மின்வாரிய ஊழியர்களும் கலந்து கொண்டிருக்கின்றனர். இதனால் கடலோர ஆந்திரா, ராயலசீமா பகுதிகளில் மின்சாரம் முழுமையாக துண்டிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இதனால் ஹைதராபாத்தில் இயங்கும் சாப்ட்வேர் நிறுவனங்கள் கடுமையாக பாதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன.

இமயமலை பகுதியில் ரிக்டர் அளவுகோலில் 8 அலகுகள் அளவில் நிலநடுக்கம் ஏற்பட்டால் சுமார் 8 லட்சத்துக்கும் அதிகமான மக்கள் உயிரிழக்கும் அபாயம் உள்ளதாக தேசிய பேரிடர் மேலாண்மை வாரியம் அதிர்ச்சி எச்சரிக்கை விடுத்திருக்கிறது.

இந்த 53 ஆண்டுகளில் ரிக்டர் அளவுகோலில் 8 புள்ளிகளாக பதிவான 4 நிலநடுக்கம் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

சில்லாங்கில் 1897, காங்ராவில் 1905, பீகார்-நேபாளம் எல்லையில் 1934, அசாமில் - 1950 ஆம் ஆண்டு ஏற்பட்ட நிலநடுக்கங்களால் பலத்த இழப்பு ஏற்பட்டது.

1950-ல் இருந்து அதைப் போன்ற ஒரு நிலநடுக்கம் ஏற்படவில்லை. இருப்பினும் இந்த பகுதிகளில் மீண்டும் நிலநடுக்கம் ஏற்படக்கூடிய வாய்ப்புகள் இருக்கிறது.

தற்போதைய நிலையில் இமயமலைத்தொடர் பகுதிகளில் ரிக்டர் அளவில் 8 அல்லது அதற்கு மேலான அளவு நிலநடுக்கம் ஏற்பட்டால் காஷ்மீர் முதல் அருணாசலப் பிரதேசம் வரை 8 முதல் 9 லட்சம் வரையிலான மக்கள் உயிரிழக்கும் அபாயம் உள்ளது.

1897 ஆம் ஆண்டு மேகாலயா தலைநகர் ஷில்லாங்கை மையமாகக் கொண்டு மிகப் பெரிய நிலநடுக்கம் ஏற்பட்டது. இது மியான்மர் முதல் டெல்லி வரை கடுமையான விளைவுகளை ஏற்படுத்தியது.

மீண்டும் 1897ஆம் ஆண்டைப் போல ஒரு நிலநடுக்கம் தற்போது ஏற்பட்டால் அசாம் மாநிலத்தில் மட்டும் 6 லட்சம் பேர் பலியாகும் அபாயம் இருக்கிறது.

ஷில்லாங் நிலநடுக்கம் போல மீண்டும் ஏற்பட்டால் எப்படியான பேரிடர் மீட்பு பணிகளை மேற்கொள்வது என்பதற்கான நடவடிக்கைகள் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட இருக்கிறது. இவ்வாறு அவர் கூறினார்.

2 அமெரிக்கர்கள், ஒரு ஜெர்மானியருக்கு மருத்துவத்துக்கான நோபல் பரிசு

2013ஆம் ஆண்டுக்கான மருத்துவத்துக்கான நோபல் பரிசு 3 பேருக்கு அறிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இவர்களில் இருவர் அமெரிக்கர்கள், ஒருவர் ஜெர்மனியிலிருந்து அமெரிக்காவுக்கு வ்நது செட்டிலானவர். 

ஸ்வீடனில் இந்த அறிவிப்பை நோபல் தேர்வுக்குழுத் தலைவர் கோரன் ஹான்சன் வெளியிட்டார். அதன்படி, அமெரிக்காவை சேர்ந்த ஜேம்ஸ் ரோத்மென், ராண்டி செக்மேன் ஆகியோருக்கும், ஜெர்மனியிலிருந்து 1980ம் ஆண்டு அமெரிக்காவுக்கு வந்து செட்டிலான தாமஸ் சுடோஃப் என்ற விஞ்ஞானிக்கும் பரிசு கிடைத்துள்ளது. 

இவர்கள் மூவரும் 2013 ஆண்டின் மருத்துவத்திற்கான நோபல் பரிசினை பெற்றுள்ளனர். மனித செல்களின் நகர்வை கட்டுப்படுத்துவது எது என்பது தொடர்பான ஆய்வுக்காக இந்த பரிசு வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அவர்களுக்கு 7.7 கோடி ரூபாய் பரிசு வழங்கப்படுகிறது. 

இந்த பரிசு மூன்று பேருக்கும் சமமாக பிரித்தளிக்கப்படுகிறது. 1901ஆம் ஆண்டு முதல் 2012 ஆம் ஆண்டு வரை 201 பேர் மருத்துவத்துக்கான நோபல் பரிசு பெற்றுள்ளனர். இந்த நோபல் பரிசு வென்ற 201 பேரில் 10 பேர் பெண்கள் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

Federer-Zhang win doubles opener at Shanghai Masters

The wildcard team of Roger Federer and Zhang Ze needed just 48 minutes to beat Kevin Anderson of South Africa and Russian Dmitry Tursunov 6-2, 6-1 in the opening round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters men's doubles event Monday.

Sun set for 11-year magnetic pole flip

A special event is about to occur in our sun, and it could impact our lives. The magnetic poles of the sun — which are like the ends of a giant bar magnet — are about to flip, that is, the polar north will become the polar south and vice versa. According to scientists at the Wilcox Solar Observatory at Stanford University , the sun could be barely two to three months away from this magnetic field reversal. The change is periodic, taking place once every 11 years or so.

The flip also corresponds with peak activity during the 11-year solar cycle. This is when sunspots — intense magnetic field flu ctuations that appear as dark spots on the solar surface — are highest in number. "When the number of sunspots is highest, a time known as the solar maximum, the sun's large-scale dipole magnetic field starts reversing. This reversal is akin to sun's magnetic poles flipping. It's almost as if a giant magnet inside the sun was turned upside down," said Dibyendu Nandi, an a strop hysicist at Kolkata's Indian Institute of Science Education and Research.

Why does this flip take place? Nandi said that the periodic reversal was linked to the motion of plasma flows inside the sun. The flow of this hot, electrically-charged material tosses and turns one component of the magnetic field into another, eventually changing the sun's dipole field. "This process is technically known as the solar dynamo mechanism and can be studied using computer models which we do in our laboratories," Nandi said. Changes in the sun's magnetic field ripple through the solar system and beyond, a region known as the heliosphere. The weather in space is expected to be most hazardous in the next few months as the flip begins to take place, Nandi said.

"The chances of solar magnetic storms occurring are also high. These storms carry a vast amount of charged particles and magnetic fieldsthrough interplanetary space and can pose a threat to satellite operations , telecommunications , air traffic on polar routes and power grids in countries at high latitudes ," the scientist said.

Scientists are watching the event closely to fully understand the changes that take place. It's also of special interest because the current solar cycle — the 24th since 1755, when sunspot activity began to be recorded — is one of the weakest in 100 years. A strong solar magnetic field also acts as a shield against cosmic rays coming from outer space. "Due to the current weak cycle, we have been recording high cosmic ray influx since 2009," said B N Dwivedi of IIT-BHU.

In India, solar magnetic fields are being observed from the solar observatories at Udaipur and Kodaikanal. Then there are theoretical astrophysicists such as Nandi who build computer models to study and predict solar behaviour.

IPL spot-fixing: Blow to N Srinivasan as Supreme Court proposes new probe panel

There seems to be no end to troubles for Indian cricket board president N Srinivasan as the Supreme Court on Monday mooted a new probe into the Indian Premier League spot-fixing scam by an independent three-member committee.

A bench of Justices AK Patnaik and Jagdish S Khehar said it wanted an independent panel that will not only investigate the IPL scandal but also give recommendations to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

It also turned down board’s plea that the proposed panel should find out if further probe is required into all the issues mentioned in the chargesheet filed by the Mumbai Police in the scandal.

The bench said the panel would conduct an independent inquiry into the allegations and submit its report to the Supreme Court.

“Mumbai Police can go on its own. Let the panel make an independent inquiry and give report to the Supreme Court and suggest remedial measures,” it said.

Deliberating on a petition filed by the Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB), the court suggested a three-member panel, headed by former Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana high court Mukul Mudgal to probe the IPL scandal.

The court asked the counsel of the CAB, represented by senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi, and the BCCI to come up with their suggestions and adjourned the case till Tuesday morning.

The other members of the three-member panel are senior advocate Nilay Dutta and Additional Solicitor General L Nageshwar Rao. Interestingly, Rao is also a cricketer.

The apex court had on August 30 heard the petition filed by Aditya Verma, secretary, CAB, challenging the high court’s order refusing to appoint a fresh committee to probe the scam. BCCI panel gave a clean chit to CSK and RR owners who faced charges of betting in the IPL.

While they haven't been seen together even on screen after Yash Chopra's 'Silsila' in 1981, the two were recently spotted travelling in the same flight.

Android KitKat images leaked, reveal new features

Screenshots of Google's next version of Android OS 4.4 KitKat have allegedly leaked online. Tech website Gadget Helpline has posted screenshots of a Nexus 4 running Android 4.4.

Reports suggest Google is not giving a major redesign to Android 4.4 KitKat. It may look lot like Android Jelly Bean, except for the palette colour scheme.


As per the screen grabs, white seems to be the dominant colour in the new OS version. The notification buttons appear white, not blue. White colour is also prominently featured in the Dialer app. There are also reports that the animations in Android KitKat are smoother and 'subtler' compared to those of its predecessors.

The leaked screenshots show a new Settings menu option for "Printing". There's also an option for Payments and Wireless Display within Settings. This means a new wireless NFC payment system will be added to the OS and it will no longer be a third-party application feature.

The leaked images also show some new photo editing prompts like Tilt-Shift, Center Focus, Negative and Posterize. The new camera interface adds Instagram-style filters that will allow users to preview final version of images.

Users will have option to save images as PDF files on KitKat. The functionalities too are reported to have been expanded to include editing paper size, orientation, number of copies and colours before printing images and PDF files directly on a local printer.

Android 4.4 KitKat will come with pre-loaded apps like Google Drive and Google Keep.

Android 4.4 Kitkat, which was announced by the tech giant in September, is slated to release later this month along with Nexus 5.

Air India’s privatisation looms: think-tank

State-owned national carrier Air India’s (AI) return to profitability is ruled out and privatisation is now a certainty, a report by aviation consultancy firm Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (Capa) said.

Last week, aviation minister Ajit Singh had said that if there was political consensus, government may look at privatising AI.

“Despite the fact that AI’s performance has improved significantly, we rule out the possibility of AI’s return to profitability under its current ownership structure. With the carrier expected to post continued losses, we expected that the next government which takes office in 2014 will finally bite the bullet and commence the privatisation of AI,” the report said.

India’s international traffic, it said, was expected to approach 50 million passengers by the end of financial year 2013-14. Capa said the five-year-20 aircraft rule for Indian carriers to fly abroad was one of the “most damaging and discriminatory regulations” in India.

Abolition of this regulation is clearly in India’s national interest, it said.

“The implications could be far-reaching. GoAir, the only incumbent carrier which does not yet qualify for international services would be permitted to go abroad, but perhaps more significantly so too would the two new ventures announced this year, AirAsia India and Tata-SIA, as well as other startups. Both carriers have made clear their interest in launching international services.”

The BSE Sensex and the broader Nifty are likely to open strongly on Tuesday, a day after the Reserve Bank of India cut the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate by 50 basis points to 9 per cent.

Nifty futures on the Singapore Exchange traded 0.85 per cent higher at 5,983 as of 08.20 a.m. The spot Nifty had closed down 1 point at 5,906 on Monday, while the Sensex ended 21 points lower at 5,906.

The central bank also said that it will provide additional liquidity through term repos of 7-day and 14-day tenors for a notified amount equivalent to 0.25 per cent of net demand and time liabilities (NDTL) through variable rate auctions to take place every Friday from 11 October 2013.

These measures will lower the overnight rate further and help ease liquidity conditions, global brokerage Nomura said.

Banking stocks, which have been under tremendous pressure since the central bank raised repo rate last September, are likely to lead the gains. Private sector lenders such as Yes Bank and IndusInd Bank, who have greater reliance on bulk deposits, are likely to witness sharp gains.

The RBI had jacked-up the MSF rate by 200 basis points in mid-July, the most dramatic move in a package of measures to defend the rupee, which had made the MSF India's de facto policy rate.

With the rupee stabilising, these emergency measures are being withdrawn. The rupee has strengthened 11.4 per cent to 61.79 per dollar after hitting an all-time low of 68.85 to the dollar on August 28.

In his first monetary policy review last month, new RBI governor Raghuram Rajan cut the MSF rate by 75 basis points even as he unexpectedly raised the policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 7.50 per cent and said he wanted the repo rate to regain its role as the policy rate.

Normally, the MSF rate is 100 basis points higher than the repo rate. Monday's move narrowed the gap to 150 basis points.

Multi-Brand Retail: Has India fallen off global players’ radar?

At the ongoing World Retail Congress in Paris, global heads of retail chains were literally mum on India. While Mexico and the Philippines were being touted as the next big markets for commencing retail ventures, India’s policies regarding sourcing and investments have put a question mark on prospective investments.

Closer home, Walmart and its joint venture partner Bharti Enterprises are toying with the idea of ending their partnership. Reports quoted Walmart Asia Head Scott Price as stating that the partnership with Bharti was “not tenable as a base” and the two firms were “looking for the best way to move forward”.

Walmart and Bharti have a 50:50 joint venture for cash-and-carry business in India. Price said Walmart was not keen to invest in India, unless the multi-brand retail policy was made clear.

Analyst say that if Walmart indeed pulls out of India, it may not have any impact on consumers as only eight per cent of the total retail is organised. But, confidence on India as a potential investment destination could be greatly marred.

Arvind Singhal, Chairman, Technopak, who was at World Retail Congress, notes that Mexico and even the Philippines are high on global retailers’ investment agenda but not India.

“This is worrisome as we have waited 8-10 years for the retail sector to open up. But the policy is highly complicated and companies don’t want to invest without getting clarity. The need of the hour is pragmatism and not dogmatism,” he said.

Walmart’s total turnover of $469 billion is more or less equal to India’s total retail sector’s turnover estimated at $464 billion.

“For Walmart, India is still too insignificant, both from a sourcing and consumer stand point. But, the impact of such a big retailer exiting India either totally or partially can send a wrong signal to other investors,” says an analyst.

Last year in September, the Government allowed 51 per cent investment in multi-brand retail trade. Recently, it made amendments to rules after several retailers expressed concerns on 30 per cent sourcing clause, yet-to-be-made changes in FEMA rules, among others.
SOURCING CLAUSE

Walmart also sought clarity on aspects of the policy, especially the sourcing clause. In July, it expressed an inability to meet the norm requiring it to source 30 per cent of the goods from small industries, saying it could source only about 20 per cent.

Others retailers such as Carrefour and Metro too are expanding in India rather cautiously. Big names such as IKEA, H&M are yet to announce formal store opening in India.

Arpita Mukerjee of ICRIER said, “Nobody has complicated the retail policy the way India has. Doubts over classification and brand-based foreign direct investment policy have confused investors. The root of the problem is between the operating model and what the Government seeks. Therefore, the policy needs to be streamlined.”

India must tackle higher subsidy spending soon: Chidambaram

India must tackle a jump in spending on fuel and food subsidies sooner rather than later, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said, part of a series of steps aimed at stabilising the economy to be announced ahead of an election due within seven months. Asia's third largest economy is suffering its longest and deepest slump in at least a decade. Rating agencies have threatened to downgrade its sovereign debt to "junk" status, and the government is racing to revive growth in a bid to return to power for a third consecutive time.

India imports nearly 80 percent of its oil needs and a sharp decline in the rupee's value since May has made government fuel subsidies more costly. "On the government side, sooner (rather) than later we will have to address the issue of higher subsidies than budgeted, on both fuel and food," he said, on the eve of a week-long trip to the United States that includes an investor roadshow in San Francisco.

 Last month, the government deferred a plan to raise diesel prices by close to 10 percent to offset the damage caused by the weaker rupee. Oil subsidies are now estimated at more than 900 billion rupees for the current fiscal year - nearly 40 percent more than budgeted. Chidambaram, who is trying to win back investor confidence in large part by reducing a wide fiscal deficit, said India's slowdown would impact revenues and indicated he could rein in spending by some large government departments despite the looming national election. "Not as much as last year, people say last year was pretty brutal," said Chidambaram, who last year slashed more than Rs 1 trillion from budgeted spending to beat a tough fiscal deficit target. While the finance minister is unlikely to announce wide spending cuts, he said he would rigidly enforce rules that make it hard for ministries to fully utilise designated funds. 

Chidambaram said other steps to be taken could include the unwinding of measures the Reserve Bank of India introduced in July to control a rapid depreciation of the rupee. The central bank's measures, which included tightening liquidity, have been criticised for dampening growth. The rupee lost as much as 20 percent against the dollar in a rout triggered by fears the US Federal Reserve would rapidly roll back its quantitative easing programme. The rupee has since recovered some ground and Chidambaram said steps taken by India to attract capital inflows would offset much of the impact when the expected "tapering" begins. "I think the market has factored the taper more or less entirely," he said.

 "We acknowledge that the taper will happen, there will be some impact." Rising exports, dollars sent home by Indians abroad and looser rules on allowing foreign investment would drive stronger inflows, Chidambaram said. "We should be able to withstand any small impact as a result of tapering."

Resolve issues on food security before Bali meet: WTO to India

Amid concerns being raised by developed countries over the government's food security programme, new WTO chief Roberto Azevedo today asked India to work out a solution to the vexed issue ahead of the Bali ministerial meeting in December.

"One important issue where India is very much involved is food security proposal...As you can imagine with an issue this big, this is not going to be fully solved in 4 weeks. It's just not going to happen.

"What we have agreed in Geneva is we are going to be working on a Peace Clause ...which allows negotiators in Geneva to find a more permanent solution for the long term," he while addressing members of the industry chamber CII.

The WTO headquarters is in Geneva.

He further said that WTO members have less time and the trade ministers should now engage with each other and give right signals to their negotiators.

While the G-33, a group of developing nations including India, is demanding that the tenure (the peace clause) should be 10 years, developed countries such as the US are ready to accept only a 2-3 year period.

A so-called "peace clause" in WTO parlance gives legal security to member countries and protects them from being challenged under other WTO agreements.

"Between now and Bali, what we have to do is figure how that Peace Clause is going to work. How that is going to be crafted to take into account the concerns of the two sides...you allow the programme to continue unimpeded, the other side of this part is not allowing programme which are designed to provide food security...do not distort market unnecessary and unduly," he added.

He also talked on the importance of concluding the trade facilitation agreement saying it would help in reducing transactions cost for exporters.

Negotiations for a deal at the Bali meet are stuck over the tenure of an interim resolution on the demand by G-33 developing countries on food security.

The ninth WTO Ministerial Conference will be held in Bali from December 3-6. The Ministerial Conference is the highest decision-making body of the 159-member WTO which meets at least once every two years.

Supreme Court annuls Maldives presidential vote

The Supreme Court of the Maldives on Monday annulled the results of the first round of voting in the country's presidential election, agreeing with a losing candidate's claim that the election was flawed.

Four judges of a seven-member panel decided that some 5,600 votes cast in the September 7 first round were tainted, making it unclear which candidates qualified for a runoff. The court ordered revoting to be completed by November 3.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed led the vote with more than 45 percent but failed to get the needed 50 percent. Yaamin Abdul Gayoom — brother of the South Asian country's longtime autocratic leader Maumoon Abdul Gayoom — finished second and was to face Nasheed in the second round scheduled for September 28.

However, businessman Qasim Ibrahim, who finished a close third, complained that he was denied a runoff slot because of a voter registry that included made-up names and the names of people who are deceased. The difference between the second and third-placed candidates was about 2,700 votes.

The court postponed the election as it heard the case, angering the supporters of front-runner Nasheed.

The decision to annul an election hailed as free and fair by the United Nations, European Union and countries like the United States and neighboring India threatens to exacerbate the political crisis in this island nation that became a democratic system only five years ago.

The country known best for its luxury tourist resorts and beautiful beaches held its first democratic election in 2008 after the 30-year rule of Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. Nasheed, who became president in that election resigned last year amid public protests and withering support from the military and police over his decision to arrest a senior judge.

A local inquiry commission dismissed his claims that he was ousted in a coup and forced to resign at gunpoint. However, the country has since been politically polarized.

Pakistani Taliban vow to attack Malala Yousafzai again

The Pakistani Taliban on Monday said schoolgirl campaigner Malala Yousafzai had "no courage" and vowed to attack her again if they got the chance.

Gunmen sent by the Taliban tried to kill Malala on her school bus on October 9 last year.

She amazingly survived being shot in the head and has become a global ambassador for the right of all children — girls as well as boys — to go to school.

Having spread a message of "education for all" across the globe, the 16-year-old is now among the favourites for the Nobel Peace Prize, which will be awarded on Friday.

But Shahidullah Shahid, spokesman for the main Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) umbrella group, slammed Malala and said they would try again to kill her.

"She is not a brave girl and has no courage. We will target her again and attack whenever we have a chance," Shahid told AFP.

In an interview with the BBC, Malala dismissed the threats against her life and repeated her desire to return to Pakistan from Britain, where she was flown for treatment after the attack and where she now goes to school.

She first rose to prominence during the Taliban's 2007-09 rule in Pakistan's northwestern Swatvalley with a blog post for the BBC Urdu service chronicling the rigours of daily life under the Islamists.

"She even used a fake name of Gul Makai to write a diary. We attacked Malala because she was used to speak against Taliban and Islam and not because she was going to school," Shahid said.

While she has been feted by celebrities and world leaders across the West, in deeply conservative Swat, Malala's achievements are eyed with suspicion by some.

Iranians mock Netanyahu over jeans comment

Iranians have used social media to mock Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, after he suggested they were not allowed to wear jeans.

In an interview with BBC Persian TV Mr Netanyahu said that if Iranians were free they would wear blue jeans, and listen to Western music.

Hundreds of Iranians both in Iran and abroad reacted on social media sites.

Many posts showed mainly young Iranians wearing jeans and listening to Western music, some in comic poses.

Others mocked up scenes from ancient Persian history with the protagonists wearing denim.

Jeans are not banned in Iran, where an Islamic dress code requires women to cover their hair and wear modest outer clothing. Some Western music or Western-style music is tolerated.

Jeans not bombs

One picture on social media sites showed a young boy in jeans whispering into the ear of the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Another is a doctored photograph of Mr Netanyahu's address at the UN last year in which he drew a red line across a sketch of a bomb, to warn that Iran was moving closer to the metaphorical "red line" of gaining enough highly-enriched uranium for a nuclear bomb.

In the mocked-up picture, widely-shared on Twitter, the bomb has been replaced with a picture of a female figure wearing jeans, with the Israeli prime minister appearing to draw a red line across the thighs.

In the BBC Persian interview, broadcast on Friday, Mr Netanyahu said that Iranians "deserve better" than their current government:

"I think if the Iranian people had their way, they'd be wearing blue jeans, they'd have Western music, they'd have free elections."

The Israel's prime minister also said that the lives of Iranians could get worse if it gained nuclear weapons.

One Iranian response on a Facebook page that has attracted hundreds of followers read: "He thinks he saw our bomb but he hasn't seen our jeans."

Soon, visa on arrival for 40 more nations, senior tourists

India is set to roll out the red carpet for foreign tourists. The government on Monday cleared a slew of measures including extending visa on arrival (VoA) to 40 countries, establishing an online application system for visas and facilitating visa on arrival for pensioners and those attending conferences.

The decision means foreign tourists will be able to apply for an Indian visa from the comfort of their homes while citizens from 40 countries including the US, the UK, Germany, France, Brazil, Russia and China among others will avail visa on arrival when they land on Indian shores. The government has also agreed to extend visa on arrival to foreign travelers above 60 years of age from all countries and cut down the time taken to give visas to groups that are keen to attend conventions.

"There has to be a change in mindset towards the way we treat foreign tourists. All representatives of government agreed on extending visa on arrival to 40 countries and initiating an online system as soon as possible," planning minister Rajeev Shukla said.

The ministries of tourism and home affairs have been tasked with preparing a roadmap since initiating the visa on arrival scheme will require a large amount of infrastructure and manpower. So far, citizens of around 11 countries including Japan, New Zealand and Vietnam can avail visa on arrival.

The government is closely reviewing the online application systems adopted by Sri Lanka where only electronic visas are issued for touristson short visits.

A consensus was reached on these issues during a high level meeting convened here on Monday by the Planning Commission.

"We want to develop a world class visa regime. I am going to write to the home minister with the outcomes of the meeting aimed at liberalizing the visa regime," Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia told TOI.

The meeting included the national security advisor, Ahluwalia, representatives from the PMO,Intelligence Bureau, and ministries of external affairs, home and tourism.

"There was broad consensus on simplifying online visa system, relaxing visa regime for all types of conferences and senior citizen foreign tourist or foreign pensioners," Shukla said.

According to the minister, there are many senior citizens, including pensioners, who want to visit India. The government has decided to relax visa norms for a group of four such foreign tourists. But that decision has not been implemented so far. The home ministry was of the view that visa on arrival could be expanded to include more countries, but there is shortage of staff.

"Tourism ministry was willing to share its budget with the home ministry so that more officers can be posted on immigration counters that could facilitate visa on arrival," Ahluwalia said.

Another suggestion was to bring down the number of categories of visas from the existing 16 to just three -- employment, business and visitor.

It was also decided that visa on arrival visa facility would be extended to more airports like Goa, Gaya, Chandigarh and Amritsar which have a large flow of foreign tourists.

At present, visa on arrival facility is available at international airports of Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, Kochi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.

The move has been initiated after growing realization that the tourism sector can act as a bridge in the current account deficit crisis that India is facing. During 2012-13, CAD was at an all-time high of 4.8% of GDP or $88.2 billion. Government proposes to bring it down to $70 billion or 3.8% of GDP.

According to sources, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had also discussed the issue with top officials of ministries like tourism for relaxing visa norms for more countries.

In 2012, India received 6.58 million foreign tourists, up 4.3% over the previous year. India'sforeign exchange earnings in 2012 from tourists were $17.74 billion, showing an increase of 7.1% year-on-year. However, the last few months have seen a dollarless growth.

Making it easy for foreigners to visit India should be high on any government's agenda given the tourism industry's enormous potential to create jobs and earn foreign exchange, both of which are of critical importance at the moment. Tourism is the single largest employer worldwide and that's a big plus for a labour surplus economy such as ours. Tourist-friendly measures such as visa-on-arrival and online visa application should be extended to as many countries as possible. We hope that the impetus provided by Chiranjeevi continues even if he quits the Cabinet. While relaxing our restrictive visa regime is a good first step, much more needs to be done to attract visitors to India in terms of improving our soft and hard infrastructure.

Supreme Court to hear pleas against Aadhar today

The petition of Roy and others came up before a bench comprising Justices BS Chauhan and SA Bobde which said it will be heard along with the applications filed by the Centre and the three oil PSUs seeking modification of its earlier order that Aadhar card is not mandatory and no person should suffer for want of it in getting benefits of government schemes.

"The enrolment under the UIDAI scheme is purportedly voluntary - yet many welfare schemes of the State seem to mandate the need for an Aadhar number to access those schemes - effectively making Aadhar enrolment compulsory," the petition filed by social workers said.

The petition also said the manner in which the biometric details of the citizens are collected by private contractors and NGOs hired by UIDAI without any safeguard makes it prone to misuse not only by private actors but also by the State.

"In the present day and age, where every country is facing the problem of identity frauds, usage of fake identities for money laundering, terrorism, etc., UID is letting private contractors collect sensitive data of persons, which is not protected or governed under any law, whatsoever.

The petitioners also claimed there is an empirical research to show that the biometric identification denoted for UID, namely the Iris Scan and finger print Identification, is faulty and capable of misuse.

"Without a statutory framework determining accountability, data-protection, offences for violation etc., UID is putting in jeopardy not only life and rights of people but also security of our country," the petitioners said.

43% Delhi MLAs have criminal cases: Report

Delhi has the maximum percentage of legislators with criminal records among the five states going to polls in November-December, election watchdogs have claimed.

Digging out information furnished in the affidavits filed before the returning officers in 2008, the National Election Watch (NEW) and Association for Democratic Reform (ADR) said 43% of the legislators in the Capital had criminal cases against them.

However, there was no information on how many cases had been decided. Many of the cases enlisted in the affidavits were not serious in nature; such as defacement of property (pasting posters, etc) or those registered for leading a protest.

Apart from Delhi, assembly elections will be held in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Mizoram.

In all the five states, 13% of the contesting candidates (879 out of 6870 candidates) had declared pending criminal cases in their poll papers during the 2008 assembly elections. The percentage of candidates with serious criminal cases against them was 6%.

According to the analysis, Madhya Pradesh has highest the percentage - 11% - of MLAs with serious criminal cases followed by Delhi and Chhattisgarh with 9%. Mizoram, with 7%, has the lowest percentage of MLAs with criminal cases among the five states.

In terms of party affiliation, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had given tickets to 35% candidates with criminal cases in Delhi while 22% tainted candidates were given tickets in the 2008 Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections. The Congress had fielded 30% tainted candidates in Delhi and 31% in Madhya Pradesh.

The analysis of the affidavits revealed that Delhi has the highest percentage - 69% - of MLAs whose assets are in crores followed by Rajasthan with 46% and Madhya Pradesh with 38%.

The representation of women still remains dismal across five states. Of the 7,520 candidates who contested the 2008 assembly elections in the five states, only 8% were women. The lowest percentage of women candidates were fielded in Mizoram (4%), while Delhi and Chhattisgarh states had 9% women candidates -- highest among the five states.

Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel said several MLAs have "political cases" - ones registered during demonstrations and protests - against them and these are not considered when candidates are shortlisted.

"Otherwise, it will be our conscious effort to ensure aspirants with criminal record do not get tickets," Goel said.

Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Jai Prakash Agarwal said, "The selection of candidates is done by the party's election committee. The party ensures that people with criminal background do not get tickets."

LoC encounter in final phase, Pak involvement nailed

The Army is believed to be conducting final operations in Keran sector of Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district, where 30 to 40 militants and Pakistan special forces' troops had infiltrated.

The operations in Shalbhatti village had begun on September 24 and sources said, the same could be called off in a day or two.

Seven militants have been killed while a huge cache of arms and war-like stores recovered by the Indian Army troops.

As the encounter entered 15th day on Tuesday, the government once again denied that the situation was like Kargil War of 1999.

"We conducted search operations in the sector and recovered war-like stores of arms and ammunitions," Officiating Brigadier General Staff (BGS) Col Sanjay Mitra told reporters in Srinagar yesterday.

Among the ammo recovered include AK-47 rifles, pistols, one sniper rifle, 20 UBGL grenades, radio-sets and other war-like stores. Some medicines and food items were also found.

Many of the weapons and ammunition recovered carry the 'Made in Pakistan' tag.

The Centre meanwhile said maintaining sanctity of the Line of Control (LoC) was of "primary importance".

"We have repeatedly emphasised that the maintenance of sanctity of Line of Control is of primary importance. Even at the last meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, this issue was re- emphasised.

"As regard to the current situation, our armed forces who are responsible of sanctity undertaking currently appropriate necessary measures....Based on the outcome of those efforts, we will take the further necessary action, as appropriate," a spokesperson in the External Affairs Ministry said

The Directors General of Military Operations of India and Pakistan will be talking today, as part of their routing contacts.

DNA's Ishfaq-ul-Hassan meanwhile reports that a letter seized from a slain infiltrator in the Keran sector has exposed Pakistan’s involvement in the current stand-off on the LoC.

The letter was written by Havaldar Mohommad Yousuf Chaudhary of 645 MD (Mujhaideen) regiment of Pakistan to his “brother Inayat” seeking help for his associate Farid Malik.

“Hope you are in good mood. I have come to know that your letter has reached. I am sending this letter through Farid Malik. Please do whatever you could to help him out,” reads the translation of the letter written in Urdu.

It was seized during one of the operations in the general area of Keran. Army officials say the 645 Mujahideen regiment of Pakistan is notorious for training and aiding militants in Jammu and Kashmir.

“The letter clearly indicates that the Pakistan army is abetting and supporting the infiltrators. This proves Pakistan’s involvement beyond doubt. We are trying to verify whether the slain infiltrator from whom the letter was recovered was Chaudhary,” an Army officer said.

Why Democrats Are Dug in on Shutdown Impasse

Republicans have several, sometimes conflicting goals in the current government-shutdown impasse. Democrats, by contrast, have just one. It's called "break the fever."

Breaking the fever is code for ending the cycle of recurring, last-minute crises over spending bills and increases in the nation's borrowing limit—the debt ceiling. The White House believes these crises give outsize power to a minority of conservative House Republicans who don't have the strength to push their agenda into law but can, in a crisis, stop the action.

More important, Democrats are convinced they must break the cycle now, or see much of the Obama second-term agenda sink away.

"The only way for us to go forward is to all make clear that the era of threatening default is over," Gene Sperling, head of the White House National Economic Council, said Monday at a breakfast organized by Politico.

This view explains the current White House position that it won't engage in negotiations with Republicans. That position is politically problematic, to be sure, and isn't quite what it seems. Down deep, Democrats know they will have to negotiate a spending deal eventually. They merely hope to establish the principle that negotiations won't involve anything that might cripple the president's signature health-care initiative and won't take place when the time left to fund the government has ticked down to or below zero.

Many don't accept this characterization of the standoff, of course. For one thing, it isn't unusual for Washington to be compelled by deadlines and crises. As Republican Rep. Tom Cole of Oklahoma puts in, "In this town, deadlines are like alarm clocks."

Still, just as understanding the impasse requires seeing how House Republicans view things, as discussed recently in this space, it's also necessary to understand the forces motivating Democrats.

The most striking aspect of this fight overall is that neither party's leaders picked it. One Republican member of Congress likens the situation to a legend surrounding the Battle of Gettysburg, which holds that Confederate soldiers went on a mission to find shoes for the troops, stumbled upon a big deployment of Union troops, and accidentally opened the door for an epic battle.

Similarly, Republican leaders never planned to fight this particular fight. They didn't intend to battle over whether to fund the government past Oct. 1 and didn't intend to make Obamacare, the president's health-insurance program, the subject of the fall debate.

Instead, their plan, nurtured all summer long, was to focus on continuing their long campaign to hold down spending, where they have had some success. And they didn't intend to use as a lever the legislation to keep funding government, but rather the bill needed to raise the country's debt ceiling.

That all changed when Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and the tea-party movement spent August whipping up grass-roots sentiment to force the GOP to assume as its principal cause the defunding of Obamacare, and to use continued government operations as leverage. Eventually, House Speaker John Boehner acquiesced.

By picking that fight, the GOP rebels chose to battle over the one issue on which they don't have the votes in Congress to prevail, and on which the Obama administration was least likely to bend. That threw Republican strategy into a cocked hat, and it has created uncertainty over whether the GOP's principal goal is defunding Obamacare, or delaying it, or attacking deficits and debt.

But the shift also affected Obama administration thinking. It further convinced many Democrats that the most extreme elements of the Republican House caucus really had taken charge and that the White House had to react.

Initially, Democrats thought they had positioned themselves to claim the public-relations high ground in a budget fight because, unlike in some past budget showdowns, they proclaimed they weren't actually asking for anything new—no demands for more tax revenue, no insistence on new spending or social programs. They planned only to ask that the government stay open and the debt ceiling go up.

In fact, Democrats calculated they would make their main concession up front, accepting for now the lower level of domestic and defense spending for the current fiscal year that House Republicans set instead of attempting to move toward the higher level Democrats prefer. That, they thought, would trump GOP demands for other concessions.

But the tea party swamped both parties' plans. Now Democrats are convinced that the cycle of budget brinkmanship will only recur if it isn't stopped now—which explains why heels are digging in at the White House.

The White House problem is that the president's "we won't negotiate" position will be difficult to maintain politically with Americans who expect solutions, even to tough problems. Mr. Obama's real position is that he will negotiate once Republicans reopen the government, even temporarily, and ensure bills will be paid, and you can expect to hear more from him on that in days to come.

Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid: God doesn’t make men like them any more

Like many cricket aficionados of India, this writer too found it difficult to choose as to which team to support in the final of the Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20) at Ferozeshah Kotla, Delhi: To support the one captained by a member of that rare breed of gentlemen who was as solid as a wall on the cricket field, or the one which had in its ranks a master blaster whose phenomenal achievements have become the cricketing touchstone against which the batsmen of all generations are and will be appraised?

In fact, the said match was not about two Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises; it was all about two Indian batting greats. That both of them — Rahul Dravid of Rajasthan Royals and Sachin Tendulkar of Mumbai Indians — were playing their last T20 match only made the choice much more difficult and no less emotional. Emotional because this writer belongs to a generation that not only grew up watching these two gentlemen play but also grew up along with them.

Sunday’s CLT20 final match was special, for it gave us one last glimpse of the batting legends together on the field as professional players. Dravid has now retired from all forms of competitive cricket and Tendulkar will henceforth be seen only in white flannels in Test matches.

There were cheers for both of them from the spectators as well as the rest of the players. Both were given guards of honour by their respective teams. There was goodwill all around and the warmth in the air was palpable. The batting legends too did not miss the significance of the occasion.

“One final time is nice. It’s funny that we have played against each other more in coloured clothing,” said Dravid, and added, “Even though Tendulkar is of my age or two months younger to me, he is seven years senior to me as an international cricketer. When I came into the Indian team, in my third Test, Tendulkar was India captain. He was someone you would look up to as a young cricketer growing up. You saw this young kid do amazing things across the world. It was sort of inspiration for all of us playing First-Class cricket.”

Tendulkar too returned the compliments, describing Dravid as a “master technician.”

“Absolutely, he is a master technician. Any day in my team, he will be number three, because there were so many innings in which he batted brilliantly. When the rest of the guys found it difficult, he was comfortable. He loved challenges and I knew we could bank on Rahul at the times of difficulty,” recalled the little master fondly.

Interestingly, in their final appearance in a match together, though on opposite sides, both Tendulkar and Dravid were bowled out rather cheaply: Tendulkar was clean bowled by Shane Watson for 15 after scoring two breathtaking boundaries in the previous two deliveries, and Dravid, who walked in as the eighth batsman, made just one run before exposing his leg stump to a Nathan Coulter-Nile delivery. But that did not take anything away from the greatness of the two batting maestros who have together scored close to 92,000 runs in all formats of the game.

It was like the game of cricket itself decided to ensure that two of its most illustrious ambassadors remained equally the focus of the attention and not an insignificant score in an insignificant T20 match. Yes, for once, the players were bigger than the ‘game’ and deservedly hogged all the attention and adulation.

Asked if his jersey number should be retired, Dravid magnanimously said, “I’m okay giving away my jersey number (19). Dinesh Karthik is wearing mine, I think.” The No 10 jersey made famous by Tendulkar would also go to a youngster in the future, and Tendulkar would have no complaints. For these two finest achievers, it would be like passing the cricketing baton to the next generation. They may be very few, but gentlemen still exist in what is supposedly the gentleman’s game. It is just the god doesn’t make men like ‘em anymore.

How to win friends and influence people, like Narendra Modi

Every time he begins by saying, “Mitron (friends)”, expectations – be it on his home turf Gujarat or somewhere in north India, or even in the south – shoot high.

And BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi definitely relishes the effect his words have on his audience. But for that — call it a serious gimmick or a genuine urge to connect — Modi prepares himself.

A senior CMO official, who refused to be named, said in Gandhinagar: “He has the amazing capacity to customise his speech to suit the audience.”

How? He has a team of experts who supply him local inputs. And second, he listens to people in group discussions before he opens up in a rally.

Take, for instance, his much quoted one-liner, “Pehle shauchalay phir devalay (first toilets, then temples)”. It found immediate traction with his student listeners here on October 2.

But what went behind the scene is worth reporting too. Modi spent more than eight hours with the students, listening — rather than talking, as most politicians often do — to the ideas and solutions that the youth had to offer.

As it got over, he shared his impression with his aides who took notes on ideas to be pursued further as elements of his campaign. The process is quite evident whenever he addresses rallies — students to women, diamond merchants to advertising professionals, farmers to small-time entrepreneurs.



A top aide closely involved in Modi’s poll campaign agrees that Modi plays different strokes to different folks. He said, “Modi does not look at voters as a homogeneous lot. He’s not obsessed with a single issue.”

During the last Gujarat polls, Modi reached out to different corners to get to know the local issues. Then, his aides went back and forth for feedback on solutions to various problems, which were later incorporated in the manifesto.

While addressing a rally in Hyderabad, Modi referred to the Telangana liberation day, commemorating the end of the Nizam rule on September 17, 1948. “I am fortunate to be born on the same day,” he said to a thunderous applause.

Surprisingly, he got the crowd — predominantly from the Telangana region — chant “Jai Telangana” and “Jai Seemandhra” along with him.

In Kolkata, he found businessmen cheering him when he opened his speech with “if you want to deliver a ball, you need to go a few steps back”. That struck a chord. The audience shouted: “We are tired of the past and want to know the future. Please hand over the mike to Mr Modi.”

At Tiruchi, though Modi spoke in Hindi, he made up by speaking first in Tamil for two minutes. “What are the special traits of Tamils?” he asked and then answered: “The Tamil people are hardworking, sincere and, above all, very loyal.” He did not forget to mention Tamil fishermen who were often attacked by the Sri Lankan navy.

But in Bangalore, Modi’s appeal during the assembly polls did not help the BJP, as it was bedevilled by anti-incumbency issues. Now, Modi plans to connect to local citizens through video conferencing in different phases.

Ensuring the LoC’s sanctity is of primary importance: Govt

India on Monday said ensuring the sanctity of the de facto Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan was of primary importance as the Indian Army continued an operation to evict suspected Islamist militants holed up Jammu and Kashmir’s Keran area.

“We have repeatedly emphasized that the maintenance of sanctity of Line of Control is of primary importance. Even at the last meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, this issue was re-emphasized,” Syed Akbaruddin, spokesman for the Indian foreign ministry, told reporters. He was referring to a meeting between the two leaders in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting on 29 September. During talks it was decided that the directors general of military operations from the Indian and Pakistan armies would meet and discuss ways to keep the border peace.

A 2003 agreement to ensure a ceasefire along their common borders has been violated several times this year with media reports putting the number at between 50-60. In January, two Indian soldiers were apparently beheaded by Pakistani troops who crossed the LoC. In August, five Indian soldiers were killed in a similar ambush straining ties between the two neighbours.

According to media reports, the Indian Army is currently trying to evict an unspecified number of Islamist militants holed up in Kashmir’s Keran sector. Referring to this, Akbaruddin said “our armed forces who are responsible (for maintaining the) sanctity (of the LoC are) currently undertaking appropriate necessary measures... Based on the outcome of those efforts, we will take the further necessary action, as appropriate”.

Asked when the directors general of military operations of India and Pakistan would meet to lessen border tensions in the Kashmir region, as was agreed in the meeting between the two prime ministers, Akbaruddin said the senior military officers were in contact via a hotline every Tuesday and a meeting would depend on their telephonic conversation.
