Assam logs 15000 suicides in 5 years

Assam witnessed around 15,000 suicides in the last five years, most of the cases involving men aged between 30 and 44 years and women between 15 and 29.

A study of suicide cases registered with the state police since 2008 showed that most men committed suicide out of frustration on being unable to meet rising financial needs. Most women, on the other hand, took the extreme step following emotional problems.

Though the instance of 30-year-old Barun Kalita and his wife Anamika ending their lives in the Brahmaputra here on Monday because of their inability to bear the treatment cost of their daughter Riyasmita brought to focus a heartrending tale of poverty-induced desperation, in many cases, it was found that boys or girls, barely between 10 and 14 years of age, ended their lives over trivial issues like being scolded by their parents.

Clinical psychologist of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital Mythili Hazarika attributed the disturbing trend to decreasing levels of patience and the spirit to cope with the pressures associated with a fast changing life — both career and family-wise.

Between 2008 and 2012, 146 boys aged between 10 and 14 years committed suicide along with 99 girls of the same age group.

CID officials said most of these cases were of school students committing suicide following poor performance in examinations or on being denied things or being scolded by their parents. “Recently, a young girl committed suicide in Guwahati after her parents turned down her request for a pair of bangles. Young people should understand that this world has a lot of opportunities for them and they should prepare themselves for the ch-allenges,” a CID official said.

Rajiv Daulagupu, a young life-skill trainer here, said lack of empathy, appreciation of life and its limitless opportunities led many towards suicide.

“The reasons might be numerous but solutions lie on us. Risk becomes manifold when one is not aware about the self and more unfortunately, has no proper guidance and support during crises in life. In today’s ever-changing, wants-amplified world where negative emotions are high and sensitivity low, we must put some time and money on scientific research to understand the roots of the problem,” Daulagupu said.

While many suggested that the concept of volunteering should be encouraged, particularly among youths, to help them appreciate life more, many, however, said though growing frustration was forcing many urbanites to end their lives, people in Assam’s rural areas were taking the extreme step because the numerous government welfare schemes were not reaching them properly.

Citing Barun’s case, Mukut Kalita of People’s Rights Forum, an NGO, told The Telegraph, “In places like Nalbari, people in villages are being forced to give up farming because of increasing inflation and decreasing recovery of costs from sale of their produce. They are selling off their land and coming to Guwahati in search of jobs in security agencies and private firms. Some are also working as vendors.”

“But many of them often find it hard to cope with the soaring prices and end up being frustrated. And if, in the mean time, a dependent comes down with a major illness, as had happened in the case of Barun, they tend to reach the end of the tether. If Barun had been fully aware of the government scheme for babies with heart ailments, he would not have taken the extreme step,” Kalita added.

The Assam health and family welfare department had introduced a scheme in 2010 whereby children with congenital heart diseases from low-income group families were operated upon for free at Narayana Hrudayalaya in Bangalore and Calcutta. The state government even bears the travel charges and other expenses incurred during the procedure.

Body recovered: The body of Anamika, wife of Barun Kalita who had committed suicide in the Brahmaputra with their 10-month-old daughter, was today found floating at Sualkuchi in Kamrup district.
The body was identified by her family members and handed over to them after an autopsy.

River police superintendent Nitai Ghosh told The Telegraph that search operation continued in the river till 5pm today but the bodies of Barun and the baby remained untraced.

Barun’s family members in Haribhanga village of Nalbari district, about 90km from here, yesterday said the couple had ended their lives with their daughter Riyasmita as they were unable to bear the treatment cost of the baby who had a hole in her heart.

On Monday morning, the couple had come from Nalbari and hired a boat at Sukreswar temple ghat on the bank of the Brahmaputra for Rs 500 and jumped off it in the middle of the river.

Meanwhile, members of the Assam unit of Aam Aadmi Party today staged a protest near Dighlipukhuri here blaming the state government for the tragedy. They alleged that the couple ended their lives as information on the state health department’s scheme to provide free treatment to children with congenital heart disease had failed to reach them.

Dhoom 3 teaser hints at box office dhoom

Aamir showcases his chiselled body in full glory, and he vrooms away on the bike, performing daredevil stunts with what seems like the ease of a professional biker.
villain, and uber stylish bikes have been synonymous with Bollywood's popular Dhoom franchise — and if the teaser of Dhoom 3 is anything to go by, Aamir Khan, who plays the baddie, will take the series forward with full speed.

Watch the trailer here:

Aamir showcases his chiselled body in full glory, and he vrooms away on the bike, performing daredevil stunts with what seems like the ease of a professional biker.
Unlike the previous two movies, which starred John Abraham and Hrithik Roshan as the bad guys, Dhoom 3 has gone international with a larger plot.

If the buzz for the third instalment of the Yash Raj Films' project was not enough already, the teaser, which was released online Wednesday, managed to build up more anticipation in the audiences' mind.
The teaser got uploaded on YouTube on September 4 and has since then got over 150,000 views.
In response to the teaser on YouTube, messages like "Aamir is back" and "Aamir power rules" poured in.

One viewer posted, "Awesome movie! I will be watching this movie on first show", while a certain Rahul Bhardwaj posted: "This biker will beat the 'Express'."
We will have to wait until December 20 to see whether Dhoom 3 manages to surpass the success of Shah Rukh Khan's Chennai Express.

The teaser opens with the sound of a bike's vrooming, and the camera then zooms in to show Aamir's muscle power. He gives a poignant voiceover, and then begins the chase.

Abhishek Bachchan as supercop Jai Dixit is seen at his adventurous best suspended from a helicopter, while Uday Chopra as his right hand Ali, zips and zooms on his hi-tech bikes as usual.
Katrina Kaif adds the girl and glamour power — and, boy, she looks athletic!

Overall, the stunts in the Vijay Krishna Acharya-directed movie look well executed — especially that one shot where Aamir carefully skids his bike under a truck. A great escape indeed.
The past instalments have bagged hit status at the box office. Let's hope this one creates as much 'dhoom'.

Acupuncture as good as counseling for depression, study finds

People with depression may benefit as much from acupuncture as they do from counseling, suggests a new study.

Researchers found one in three patients was no longer depressed after three months of acupuncture or counseling, compared to one in five who received neither treatment.

"For people who have depression, who have tried various medical options, who are still not getting the benefit they want, they should try acupuncture or counseling as options that are now known to be clinically effective," said Hugh MacPherson, the study's lead author from the University of York in the UK.

Previous studies looking at whether acupuncture helps ease depression have been inconclusive. Those studies were also small and didn't compare acupuncture to other treatment options.

"What's more important for the patient is does it work in practice and that is the question we were asking," MacPherson said.

For their study, he and his colleagues recruited 755 people with moderate or severe depression. The researchers split participants into three groups: 302 were randomly assigned to receive 12 weekly acupuncture sessions, another 302 received weekly counseling sessions and 151 received usual care only.

About 70 percent of people had taken antidepressants in the three months before the study and about half reported taking pain medications. People did not have to stop taking their medicine to participate in the study.

At the outset, participants had an average depression score of 16 on a scale from 0 to 27, with higher scores symbolizing more severe depression. A 16 is considered moderately severe depression.

After three months, people assigned to the acupuncture group had an average score of about 9 - on the higher end of the mild depression category. Scores fell to 11 among members of the counseling group and about 13 in the usual care group, both considered moderate depression.

Participants who received acupuncture or counseling saw larger improvements over three months than those who had neither treatment. Those benefits remained for an additional three months after the treatments stopped.

However, any differences between acupuncture and counseling could have been due to chance, the researchers reported Tuesday in PLOS Medicine.

They found doctors would need to treat seven people using acupuncture and 10 people with counseling for one person to no longer be depressed.

"What this says is if you don't get completely better, there are other options," Dr. Philip Muskin, a psychiatrist at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, told Reuters Health.

"One option would be to take a different medication, but by this study these would be valid options," said Muskin, who was not involved with the new research.

He cautioned, however, that counseling and acupuncture are not replacements for medication. The majority of study participants were still taking antidepressants at the end of the three months.

Muskin said the study also doesn't show what types of patients respond best to acupuncture or counseling.

"What I can't tell from this study is who's who. Not everybody got better," he said.

MacPherson said it's best to ask patients for their treatment preference.

"If you talk to people, they would almost always have a leaning one way or the other," he said.

Acupuncture is only covered by health insurance in the UK for chronic pain, MacPherson said. In the U.S., some plans also cover acupuncture for pain or nausea.

According to online information from the Mayo Clinic, the risks of acupuncture are low if people hire competent and certified practitioners. Complications can include soreness, organ injury and infections.

"Cleary acupuncture is a new option," MacPherson said. "This is the first evidence that acupuncture really helps."

Go ahead given for October 28 Mars mission

India's Mars Orbiter Mission is slated to be launched on October 28 after a national committee of experts gave the go ahead for the Rs 450 crore ambitious venture after threadbare deliberations.
The committee held deliberations over two days on Thursday and Friday last and reviewed the status after senior Indian Space Research Organisation scientists gave an in-depth presentation on the mission.
Primary objectives of the mission are to demonstrate India's technological capability to send a satellite to orbit around Mars and conduct meaningful experiments such as looking for signs of life, take pictures of the red planet and study Martian environment.
"The committee has given the go ahead", an ISRO official told the media here on Sunday.
Former ISRO Chairman U.R. Rao, noted space expert Roddam Narasimha and Professors of Indian Institute of Science Bangalore were among those part of the eminent panel.
The October 21-November 19 launch window has now been pushed forward by a week, and it now starts on October 28 though final date of the window remains the same (Nov19).
"We would like to utilise the first available opportunity", the official said, adding, the launch can be expected on the afternoon of October 28, weather permitting. The Rs 150-crore Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) spacecraft is currently underoing vibration and acoustic tests at ISRO Satellite Integration and Testing Establishment here, and is slated for shipment from here on September 30 to the Sriharikota spaceport after a pre-shipment committee review on September 26. Launch campaign has already commenced in Sriharikota spaceport from where the 1,350-kg MOM spacecraft is slated to be launched by the Rs 110 crore Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C25).
The first stage of the PSLV-C25 with strap-ons has already been assembled, with the rocket ready for satellite integration by October ten.

Most Crowded Galaxy Discovered, Only 54 Million Light Years Away

Astronomers have discovered the densest galaxy ever seen, and at 54 million light years away, it’s in our galactic neighborhood.
Using the combined imaging capabilities of ground-based observatories with the high-flying Hubble Space Telescope and its cousin, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, the ultra-compact dwarf galaxy known as M60-UCD1 turns out to be 15,000 times denser than what is found in our own galaxy, the Milky Way.
“Traveling from one star to another would be a lot easier in M60-UCD1 than it is in our galaxy, but it would still take hundreds of years using present technology,” said lead author of the new study, astronomer Michigan State University’s Jay Strader, in  a press release.
What’s even more remarkable about M60-USD1 is that the galaxy’s most crowded part–its core, where half its 200 million solar masses resides–spans a radius of only 80 light years. That means the stars in this little galaxy are about 25 times  closer to each other than those we find around the Sun’s galactic neighborhood.
Chandra observations have revealed that the galaxy’s tiny core harbors a strong x-ray source, which belongs to a giant black hole that weighs 10 million times the mass of our sun. That makes it about twice the size of the black hole in our own galaxy.
Astronomers theorize that a close encounter with a neighboring galaxy billions of years ago may have ripped away stars from M60-USD1 and may have led to the supermassive black hole pulling in the surviving stars close together.
“We think nearly all of the stars have been pulled away from the exterior of what once was a much bigger galaxy,” said co-author Duncan Forbes of Swinburne University in Australia in the press release.
“This leaves behind just the very dense nucleus of the former galaxy, and an overly massive black hole.”

Amitabh Bachchan was the only person who visited ailing Dilip Kumar in hospital

Amitabh Bachchan, Dilip Kumar and Saira with a friend at the hospital.
Amitabh Bachchan, Dilip Kumar and Saira with a friend at the hospital.
One of India’s greatest living legends, Dilip Kumar has no visitors in his hospital suite at Lilavati. This, in an entertainment industry that swears by his name and acting repertoire.
Says a close family friend of Dilip Kumar and  his wife Saira, “No one except Amitabh Bachchan had the grace to pay Yusufsaab (Dilip Kumar) even a five-minute visit. At first we thought it was because he was in the ICU at the Lilavati.
The foyer outside the ICU has very little room for guests. But now he has moved into his own spacious suite and can entertain guests. In fact, I am sure he’d love to see all his friends, admirers and well-wishers who have sworn by his name for decades. But where they now?”
According to the family friend, Saira has taken the apparent snub from the film industry in a sporting way, rather than treating it as such. “Saira is philosophical about it. She tells us,  ‘Jaane do. Woh busy honge. Mujhe pataa hai unki duaaein saab ke saath hain.

Meet the lady who taught Mumbai wonderkid Sarfaraz Khan cricket is all in the mind

MCA psychologist Bavre put the wayward Mumbai teenager back on track by changing his perspective about both sport and life;15-year-old smashes ton against South Africa U-19.

A little over a year ago, Mumbai wonderkid Sarfaraz Khan’s career was in a limbo. The teenager was expelled from the BCCI’s batting academy on grounds of indiscipline.
Consequently, his confidence took a beating and it seemed his prodigious talent would go down the drain.

However, things changed after a well-wisher advised the 15-year-old’s father, Naushad Khan, to take him to Mughda Bavre, a psychologist associated with the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA). Bavre has counselled every Mumbai player right from the U-14 to the U-25 level for nearly a decade.

And Sarfaraz’s interaction with the soft-spoken woman would change his very approach to life, not just cricket. A national swimmer in the 1990s, Bavre also won the prestigious Shiv Chhatrapati Award before completing her Masters in counselling psychology from Mumbai University.

In other words, she very well knows the kind of pressure a sportsperson goes through.

More on Bavre and her therapeutic sessions with Sarfaraz, but here’s proof of the effect it has had on the boy.

On Wednesday, Sarfaraz smashed his way to a stroke-filled 101 (66 balls, 17x4, 1x6) as India Under-19 defeated South Africa Under-19 by four wickets and more 10 overs to spare in a quadrangular series match in Visakhapatnam.

Sarfaraz shared a 159-run stand for the fifth wicket with Ricky Bhui (94 not out, 95 balls, 12x4, 3x6) as the hosts chased down 271 with ease. At 93/4, India Under-19 were in a spot of bother, but the boys played counter-attacking cricket for the better part of their stand which lasted 19.5 overs.

“I am glad he is back at his best,” an elated Bavre told dna on Wednesday. “When I first spoke to him in 2012, he had self-confidence issues. But I guess I handled him well,” Bavre added.

So what were the sessions about? “I told him the importance of being level-headed and humble. I cited examples of cricketers who fell by the wayside. But Sarfaraz was sure he didn’t want to go into oblivion. I just helped him get his priorities right,” Bavre said.

After the first session, Sarfaraz wondered why he didn’t meet “Mughda aunty” earlier. “I can’t thank her enough,” father Naushad admitted. “She just changed my son’s attitude to life. No more aaltu-faltu (nonsense) business for him. He’s doubly focused on his game and fitness now.”

Bavre has but one regret. “I want him to focus on his studies. The other boys used to taunt him. I have also told his father to ensure Sarfaraz attends school regularly. What does one do after retirement? You have to be educated.”

All eyes on Yuvi and Viru as Domestic season begins with Challenger Troph

The new domestic season kicks off on Thursday with the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy, which will be the last chance for the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, Yusuf Pathan and Umesh Yadav to showcase their form and fitness ahead of the ODI series against the Australians.

The national selectors will name the Indian squad for the seven-match series on September 30, the day after the final of the three-team championship on Sunday.

With the amount of cricket being played these days, it is hard to believe that the domestic season is just getting underway, with Delhi, the national one-day champions, taking on India Red and India Blue in a contest which will help Delhi skipper Virat Kohli and swing bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar to get into rhythm for the long international season ahead.

Besides the established players and those trying to make a comeback, there are a plethora of players in all three sides who have been doing well on the domestic circuit and the IPL.

They have been trying to catch the eye of the national selectors, though it must be said it is difficult to foresee anyone breaking into the national team in a hurry.

Undoubtedly all the focus will be on a "new and fit" Yuvraj, who has been in good form in the recent one-day series against West Indies 'A'. Another good outing here over the next four days, and it will be difficult to keep him out of the Indian team.

Another player whose fitness would be under scrutiny is Umesh Yadav because fitness has ben his bane.

Delhi's Virender Sehwag will also be under the spotlight. Of late, he has looked a pale shadow of himself. But, as he returns to the venue where he got the record-breaking double-century (219) in an ODI against West Indies in December 2011, he would take inspiration from that knock.

His teammate Gautam Gambhir has also been struggling for form. Right now he is busy in County cricket for Essex and will miss out the domestic season opener.

It's difficult to say what effect his decision will have on his chances, as he needs to make big scores consistently to convince the national selectors that he still has something to offer to Team India.

Another cricketer who played in County cricket is Piyush Chawla of Uttar Pradesh. In the few matches he had with Somerset, he scored a century and in another match

Delhi: Virat Kohli (captain), Unmukt Chand, Virender Sehwag, Mithun Manhas, Rajat Bhatia, Puneet Bisht (wk), Milind Kumar, Parvinder Awana, Sumit Narwal, Manan Sharma, Varun Sood, Mohit Sharma, Ashish Nehra, Pawan Suyal, Jagrit Anand.

India Blue: Yuvraj Singh (captain), Naman Ojha (wk), Manish Pandey, Sibsankar Roy, Ankit Bawne, Abhishek Nayar, Piyush Chawla, Akshat Reddy, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Iresh Saxena, Vinay Kumar, Ankit Rajpoot.

India Red: Yusuf Pathan (captain), Kedar Jadhav, Robin Uthappa, Abhinav Mukund, Gurkeerat Singh Maan, Ishank Jaggi, Suraj Yadav, Smit Patel (wk), Umesh Yadav, Abhimanyu Mithun, Shahbaz Nadeem, Sandeep Warrier.

Actress Aishwarya Rai is returning to the arclights with Abhishek Bachchan in Happy Anniversary and the film's producer says she will be back on the big screen in the same avatar as seen in Dhoom 2.
Aishwarya's grunge look and size zero in that hit action-thriller became a rage at that time.
"Aishwarya is working hard for the film. She is working hard to lose weight. I can say she will be seen as 'Dhoom Girl' in the film," the film's producer Doshi told IANS.
Doshi, who has produced films like Bawandar and Aankhen, said it was the script that convinced the actress who had taken a sabbatical after becoming a mother.
Set to go on the floors early next year, Happy Anniversary will be directed by Prahlad Kakkar and will hit the screens next year itself.
"I share a good relationship with Mr. Bachchan but it was the script that convinced Aishwarya and Abhishek. I think Abhi and Ash are the ideal couple and they both look good together. The film will be widely shot in South Africa," said Doshi.

Trai for pan-India portability in 6 months: What it means for you

Telecom regulator TRAI today recommended full mobile number portability within six months. If implemented, this would mean you can keep your mobile number same but switch to any operator, even if that operator does not operate in your telecom circle. As of now, number portability is only partial, since anyone wanting to change operator must choose between only those operators which are present in his circle.

For example, if a subscriber belongs to Andhra Pradesh circle, he can port his mobile number to any operator of his choice within Andhra Pradesh circle only as of now. Whenever a subscriber changes his circle, he needs to acquire a new mobile number of that circle, otherwise he will be under roaming, inviting higher call charges than a normal subscriber. If what TRAI says is implemented completely, it would mean acceptance of a porting request by the Recipient Operator (the operator you want to switch to) from a mobile number belonging to any of the circles of the country, irrespective of the fact that the circle from where the subscriber is porting his mobile number and the circle to which he wants to port his number belong to the same or different porting zones.

when full MNP kicks in, every time you dial a mobile number it will be advisable to prefix it with +91 so that if it has been ported, the call gets connected. Reuters Also, when full MNP kicks in, every time you dial a mobile number it will be advisable to prefix it with +91 so that if it has been ported, the call gets connected. But the regulator seems to have waived aside a genuine consumer concern: what about higher call charges and possible subscriber complaints because of glitches in full MNP? The calling party may not know that the called number has been ported to operator of another circle and may end up paying STD charges.

In its recommendations, TRAI says “most operators were of the view that STD rates have plummeted to almost the same level as local call rates hence,it is not a major issue. Further, in most cases, the calling party may already be aware that the called party has moved to another circle. Therefore, the onus should lie on the calling party to bear the STD charges, if applicable.” The regulator has asked telcos to develop a website so that a query for a given telephone number can be given which will provide information about the current serving operator/circle for the called number. It has suggested that the Department of Telecom may carry out necessary changes in the existing Mobile Number Portability License for telcos and any other changes needed so that full MNP is active within the next six months.

Rupee trading stronger on RBI measures

(Reuters) - India's benchmark bond yield dropped as much as 10 basis points in opening trade on Thursday after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) assured it would provide liquidity to the market and also undertake open market operations if necessary.
The benchmark 10-year bond yield was down 11 basis points on the day at 8.68 percent by 0905 India time (0335 GMT).
The partially convertible rupee was trading stronger on the day at 62.23/24 per dollar versus its close of 62.44/45 on Wednesday, after the RBI eased norms for providing swaps to banks that are borrowing funds overseas.
The Reserve Bank of India late on Wednesday relaxed the minimum maturity tenure for banks' foreign currency borrowings' to one year from three years, in order to use the central bank's swap facility which was set up to support the ailing rupee.

The Reserve Bank of India said on Wednesday it will take action, including conducting open market operations, to ensure adequate liquidity is available in the banking system, acknowledging that liquidity conditions have been tightening.

Navy Yard shooting: CCTV shows gunman Aaron Alexis

The FBI has released footage of gunman Aaron Alexis who shot dead 12 people at a Navy Yard in Washington.
The 34-year-old is seen stalking the corridors of the complex on 16 September. He was eventually shot by police in a running gun battle.
Valerie Parlave, head of the FBI's field office in Washington, said they were still investigating Alexis' background and motivations.

Pakistanis struggle for food, shelter after quake

Survivors built makeshift shelters with sticks and bedsheets on Wednesday, a day after their mud houses were flattened in an earthquake that killed 285 people in southwestern Pakistan and pushed a new island up out of theArabian Sea.

While waiting for help to reach remote villages, hungry people dug through the rubble to find food. And the country's poorest province struggled with a dearth of medical supplies, hospitals and other aid.

The quake flattened wide swathes of Awaran district, where it was centered, leaving much of the population homeless.

Almost all of the 300 mud-brick homes in the village of Dalbadi were destroyed. Noor Ahmad said he was working when the quake struck and rushed home to find his house leveled and his wife and son dead.

"I'm broken,'' he said. "I have lost my family."

At least 373 people were also injured, according to a statement from theNational Disaster Management Authority, which gave the latest death toll.

Doctors in the village treated some of the injured, but due to a scarcity of medicine and staff, they were mostly seen comforting residents.

The remoteness of the area and the lack of infrastructure hampered relief efforts. Awaran district is one of the poorest in the country's most impoverished province.

Just getting to victims was challenging in a region with almost no roads where many people use four-wheel-drive vehicles and camels to traverse the rough terrain.

"We need more tents, more medicine and more food," said a spokesman for the provincial government, Jan Mohammad Bulaidi.

Houses made mostly of mud and handmade bricks had collapsed. Walls and roofs caved in, and people's possessions were scattered on the ground. A few goats roamed through the ruins.

The Pakistani military said it had rushed almost 1,000 troops to the area overnight and was sending helicopters as well. A convoy of 60 Pakistani army trucks left the port city of Karachi early Wednesday with supplies.

Pakistani forces have evacuated more than 170 people from various villages around Awaran to the district hospital, the military said. Others were evacuated to Karachi.

One survivor interviewed in his Karachi hospital bed said he was sleeping when the quake struck.

"I don't know who brought me from Awaran to here in Karachi, but I feel back pain and severe pain in my whole body," he said.

Jan said he didn't know what happened to the man's family. He was trying to contact relatives.

Local officials said they were sending doctors, food and 1,000 tents for people who had nowhere to sleep. The efforts were complicated by strong aftershocks.

Baluchistan is Pakistan's largest province but also the least populated. Medical facilities are few and often poorly stocked with supplies and qualified personnel. Awaran district has about 300,000 residents spread out over 29,000 square kilometers (11,197 square miles).

The local economy consists mostly of smuggling fuel from Iran or harvesting dates.

The area where the quake struck is at the center of an insurgency that Baluch separatists have been waging against the Pakistani government for years. The separatists regularly attack Pakistani troops and symbols of the state, such as infrastructure projects.

It's also prone to earthquakes. A magnitude 7.8 quake centered just across the border in Iran killed at least 35 people in Pakistan last April.

Tuesday's shaking was so violent it drove up mud and earth from the seafloor to create an island off the Pakistani coast.

A Pakistani Navy team reached the island by midday Wednesday. Navy geologist Mohammed Danish told the country's Geo Television that the mass was a little wider than a tennis court and slightly shorter than a football field.

The director of the National Seismic Monitoring Center confirmed that the mass was created by the quake and said scientists were trying to determine how it happened. Zahid Rafi said such masses are sometimes created by the movement of gases locked in the earth that push mud to the surface.

"That big shock beneath the earth causes a lot of disturbance," he said.

He said these types of islands can remain for a long time or eventually subside back into the ocean, depending on their makeup.

He warned residents not to visit the island because it was emitting dangerous gases.

But dozens of people went anyway, including the deputy commissioner of Gwadar district, Tufail Baloch.

Water bubbled along the edges of the island. The land was stable but the air smelled of gas that caught fire when people lit cigarettes, Baloch said.

Dead fish floated on the water's surface while residents visited the island and took stones as souvenirs, he added.

Similar land masses appeared off Pakistan's coast following quakes in 1999 and 2010, said Muhammed Arshad, a hydrographer with the navy. They eventually disappeared into the sea during the rainy season.

Rain disrupts normal life in Gujarat; 50,000 evacuated, rail traffic hit

Heavy rain over the last three days has led to flood-like situation in many parts of Gujarat. Rising water level in rivers and overflowing dams have forced evacuation of over 50,000 people from low-lying areas across the state.

Six people have died across the state so far in rain related incidents, authorities said. While two people drowned in Bharuch, two others died in Gadvel village of Kheda district. A girl was seriously injured in Kheda after the house she was living in collapsed due to heavy rains.

Rail and road traffic too has been hit. Railway officials said 18 trains were cancelled and three others rescheduled. The routes of 18 other trains were diverted.

"Around 16,000 people were shifted to safer places from Bharuch city and other parts of the district. The water level of Narmada river on Golden bridge is receding but the rain has been unrelenting," Bharuch Collector Avantika Singh said.

Surat Collector J Shivhare said that more than 15,000 people, who were moved to safer places due to rise in the water level of Tapi river, were provided food packets and other basic facilities.

Shivhare said that educational institutions would remain shut on Thursday as water entered low-lying areas of Surat.

Meanwhile, rescue operations are on in Vadodara's worst-affected villages of Karjan, Padra and Vadodara (rural), while people have been shifted to safer places using boats, Vadodara Collector Vinod Rao said.

"Teams of NDRF, fire brigade and district administration are engaged in this operation," Mr Rao said, adding that over 25,000 people from the 114 affected villages of Vadodara and Chhotaudepur districts were shifted to safer places after heavy rains hit the two districts in the past 24 hours.

There were reports of water-logging in many areas of Vadodara on Wednesday as water level of the Vishwamitri river hovered at 28.6 feet, two feet above danger level.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner of Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) C M Makwana said that about 3,900 people were shifted to safer places from low-lying areas.

He said it would take about six hours for the water level to go down at bridges across the Vishwamitri river, which runs through the city.

In the Saurashtra region, moderate to heavy downpour during the last 24 hours affected normal life and hit road traffic to Mumbai badly.

Visavadar town in Junagadh district recorded over 200 mm rainfall during the last 24 hours, followed by Rajkot, which recorded 125 mm, while Amreli and Bhavnagar recorded 100 mm and 78 mm respectively, Meteorological department sources said on Wednesday.

Attendance of students was thin in schools and colleges in Rajkot.

There was, however, no report of any rain-related casualty in the region during the last 24 hours, police said.

Ahmedabad also witnessed heavy rains which led to many low-lying areas being water-logged. The city received 100 mm of rains on Tuesday night.

Eight National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed for relief and rescue operations in different parts of the state, with three teams in Bharuch, two in Vadodara, two in Surat and one in Navsari.

The Met department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in North Gujarat, Saurashtra and Kutch during the next 36 hours, while South Gujarat region is expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall during the next 12 hours.

US court issues summons against Manmohan Singh

As Prime MinisterManmohan Singh arrives here on a four-day visit, a Sikh rights group has secured summons against him from a US court in connection with the alleged human rights violations in the counter-insurgency operations in Punjab in the 1990s.
The Sikh for Justice (SFJ), the New York-based rights body, is now planning to file an urgent leave "to effect alternative means of service" that would allow it to deliver the summons to the White House staff and members of Singh's security team when he is here.

Prime Minister Singh arrives here today for a meeting with President Barack Obama.

Knowledgeable sources said it would be very tough for the SFJ to serve summons to Singh given the tight security around him. There are also procedural difficulties for the SFJ to get the necessary court directions issued for the White House and the Secret Service.

Ravi Batra, the New York-based attorney who represents the Congress Party in a similar case filed against it by the SFJ, termed it as a publicity gimmicks.

"SFJ's 'red carpet' welcome, a lawsuit against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the leader of a free, independent and sovereign nation, is headline grabbing while insulting law, decency and common sense," Batra told PTI.

"American courts have tools to handle an out-of-control litigant, whose main goal is to use the court's ministerial act of accepting a complaint, with the USD 350 filing fee paid and then automatically issuing a summons, to falsely imply in pre-made press releases that a Court had acted on some merits - when it did no such thing," Batra said.

The 24-page complaint alleges that Singh as the Finance Minister in early 1990s approved and financed the practice of "cash rewards" to members of security forces for allegedly killing Sikhs through extra judicial means to curb militancy.

The complaint also alleges that during his tenure as the Prime Minister beginning 2004, Singh actively shielded and protected the members of his political party who were allegedly involved in 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Sikh groups have announced to hold a "Justice Rally" tomorrow in front of White House during Obama-Singh meeting.

Justifying the filing of lawsuit, SFJ's legal advisor Gurpatwant Singh Pannun said the human rights violation law suit against Singh has been filed under Alien Tort Claims Act and Torture Victim Protection Act for funding several counter insurgency operations in Punjab.
