Veteran actor Dilip Kumar discharged from hospital Press

  Mumbai: Legendary Bollywood actor Dilip Kumar, who was recuperating at the Lilavati Hospital here, was today discharged following improvement in his condition. The 90-year-old thespian was kept in the intensive care unit (ICU) for ten days after he suffered a myocardial infarction (heart attack) on September 15. The veteran actor had undergone a heart surgery 14 years ago.

"He is better and hence it was decided to take him home," sources close to the actor told PTI. Dilip Kumar discharged from hospital The actor was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994. Born as Muhammad Yusuf Khan, he later adopted the film name of Dilip Kumar.

 In a career spanning over six decades, Dilip Kumar starred in a variety of films including romantic, drama, comedy and socio-historic. He was crowned as the 'Tragedy King of Bollywood' for playing a doomed lover on screen in 'Devdas', 'Madhumati' and 'Ganga Jamuna'. His other memorable films include 'Naya Daur', 'Mughal-e-Azam', 'Ram Shyam', 'Kranti', 'Mashaal', 'Baabul' and 'Jogan'.

 His last film was 'Qila' in 1998. The actor was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema. Also, he was awarded the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, the highest civilian award conferred by the government of Pakistan in 1998.

Truth of 'affairs' will be out only when I get married: Ranbir Kapoor

Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor today said people will learn the truth about his reported affairs only when he gets married.

"When I will get married, the truth behind these reports will come out on its own. It is the media which is publishing all these news," Ranbir said, talking to reporters here.

The actor, who is currently dating Katrina Kaif after his break up with Deepika Padukone, added that at present he is focused on his films.

Answering a question, the 30-year-old actor said he believes in healthy competition, and added that he will have competition with actors ranging from Amitabh Bachchan to Varun Dhanwan, Siddharth Malhotra and Arjun Kapoor, who were all doing a good job.

Ranbir said he considered his father Rishi Kapoor the best actor of the Hindi cinema, and therefore, he doesn't want to act in the remakes of his father's films.

But if he was to choose, he would like to act in films like Karz (1980) and Jamane ko Dikhana Hai (1981), he said.

Ranbir, who began his career with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Sawaariya (2007), will soon be seen in Abhinav Kashyap's Besharam, which will release on October 2.

Manmohan-Obama meet today; Pakistan-backed terror, trade high on agenda

Washington: Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who is currently in the United States on a two-day official visit to attend the UN General Assembly session, will meet President Barack Obama at the White House on Friday.

During the much-anticipated meeting, the two leaders area expected to discuss a wide range of issues, including terrorism emanating from Pakistan, bilateral trade, LoC killings and cooperation on nuclear issus.

Their meeting comes a day after two audacious terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, in which 13 people, including a Lieutenant Colonel of the Army, were killed.

The Prime Minister, who arrived here on Thursday with an intent of deepening the bilateral strategic partnership, said that India needs US on its side at a time when added thrust is being given to developmental programmes back home.

Singh and Obama will review the status of the relationship and chart a course for the future, particularly in the areas of defence, security, trade and investment and civil nuclear cooperation.

India's concerns over the proposed changes in the US visa norms will be flagged by the Prime Minister as these are going to hurt the Indian IT persons.

This will be the third Summit meeting between the two leaders and they will look at ways to add content to the ties.

On his arrival here, Singh described the US as an "important strategic partner" and noted that the two countries have taken several steps to widen and deepen this partnership in diverse ways.

During this visit, the two sides will review the progress that has been made and also what further can be done to give "added meaning and content to this partnership," he told reporters at the Andrews Air Force Base where he was received by acting deputy chief of protocol Rosemarie Pauli.



"The United States is one of our most important strategic partner and during President Obama's regime, we have taken several steps to widen and deepen this partnership in diverse fields. And during the present visit, we will review the progress that has been made and also what further can be done to give added meaning and content to this partnership," Singh said. 


He said US is one of India's most important trading partners, important provider of investment and technology support for India's development and "we need the United States on our side as we move to give new added thrust to our development programmes." 


The Prime Minister said during his meeting with Obama, the two sides will review the international situation, particularly with regard to international economic situation, situation in the region, South East Asia, the Middle East, West Asia and in all these areas. 


"We would discuss ways and means in which India and the United States can keep each other informed about the concern of the other party," he said.

The Prime Minister is accompanied by his wife Gursharan Kaur and National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon. 


Earlier in the day, the White House also said, "President Obama is looking forward to the meeting with Singh at the Oval Office on Friday." 


Following the meeting, the two leaders would issue a joint statement in a brief media interaction. Thereafter, Obama would host Singh for a lunch.

First Lady Michelle Obama would be hosting Kaur for a private tea at the White House.

Ahead of the visit, the White House praised the role of Singh in transforming the India-US relationship. 


"From the US perspective, we have made a strategic bet on relationship with India and the strategic bet that would carry us forward in the next century," a senior administration official said.

The purpose of "short working visit" is both to reflect and appreciate the decade of this transformation and the commitments of the leaders in the government to the strategic partnership, the official said. It is also to "set out a road map for the path ahead" into the next century, the senior official said.


Singh is scheduled to leave Washington for New York immediately after his meeting with Obama.

In New York, Singh would address the UN General Assembly session on Saturday and is expected to meet his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif on September 29.

He is scheduled to return home on Tuesday.

Multi-storey building collapses in Mumbai, many feared trapped

Tragedy struck the city early on Friday morning when a four storeyed BMC building collapsed around 6am in Mumbai's Mazgaon area. The building was inhabited primarily by BMC's tenants.

According to initial details, the building was located on Brahmadev Khot marg near Babu Genu market in Mazgaon area, which is close to the Dockyard Road station on the harbour line.

The building, civic officials said, was old and probably not maintained well. Civic officials were frantically trying to ascertain the exact number of survivors and those trapped. 


This is the second major collapse in the city this year after the Aftab mansion, a residential building in Mahim collapsed in June, killing ten. The fire brigade had sent 12 fire engines, 4 ambulances and 2 rescue vans to initiate rescue operations.

Voters get right to reject all candidates in elections

New Delhi: In a landmark judgement, the Supreme Court on Friday gave the citizens of India the right to reject all candidates in elections. 

Hearing a petition filed by the People's Union for Civil Liberties, an NGO, the apex court ruled that the Electronic Voting Machines or EVMs should have a button that will allow the voters to choose "none of the above" option. 

The bench of Chief Justice P Sathasivam, Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai and Justice Ranjan Gogoi said that voters should be allowed to reject all candidates standing in an election in his/her constituency.

"Negative voting would foster purity and vibrancy in elections," the court said.

"Negative voting would lead to systemic change in polls and political parties will be forced to project clean candidates," the bench added. 

"If right to vote is statutory right, right to reject candidate is fundamental right of speech and expression under Constitution," the court stated further. 

The judgement will be implemented immediately, and the "none of the above" option will be included in EVMs and ballot papers to be used in the upcoming state Assembly Elections later this year.

The SC has also instructed the Election Commission to spread the message among voters. 

The apex court bench of Justice BN Agrawal (since retired) and Justice GS Singhvi by their February 23, 2009 judgment while referring the matter to a larger bench had framed two questions for the court to examine "whether the right of voter to exercise his choice for the candidate is a necessary concomitant of the voter's freedom of expression guaranteed under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution". 

The court on the second aspect had said, "We are further of the view that width and amplitude of the power of the (Election) Commission under Article 324 needs further consideration by a larger Bench in the light of the (earlier) judgments of this court whereby the elector's right to be informed about the assets and antecedents of the persons seeking election to the legislature has been duly recognized".

While the judgement is historic, it will have little impact on the outcome of an election as negative votes will only be recorded on EVMs but not counted. 

Those in favour of negative voting have been demanding that re-election should be ordered in a constituency where more than 50 per cent of the voters reject all candidates. At present, the law doesn't allow that. 

In the past, the Election Commission has also backed negative voting.

The governments had however been reluctant to implement the same.

As per current rules, a voter can choose to cast a "negative vote" by going to the polling booth, sign on the register, but not vote.
