For teenager Vibhuti Deshmukh (13) and her mother Sujata (names changed), life was a constant struggle due to obesity until bariatric surgery turned life around for them. Vibhuti and Sujata shared more in common than just blood, as prior to surgery both weighed around 105 kg. However, post-surgery, Vibhuti now has dropped nearly 35kg.
“The family first approached us for bariatric surgery for the daughter. Her mental health had started getting affected because of her weight. We did a complete and thorough evaluation of the patient before taking up the surgery,” said Dr Jayashri Todkar, bariatric surgeon, who is a consulting obesity surgeon at the International Centre of Excellence at Dr LH Hiranandani Hospital, Powai and Kohinoor Hospital, Kurla.
Once Vibhuti underwent the surgery, her mother got inspired and underwent bariatric surgery a month ago. Sujata said, “I am a diabetic and my weight was causing me a lot of aches and joint pain. The pain has reduced by almost 80% after the surgery. But the real wonderful change has come in my daughter, who is now happy instead of being depressed all the time as she was before. We struggled as a family for nearly two years with all kinds of weight-loss techniques, but finally opted for the surgery and we are happy.”
A study by the National Diabetes, Obesity and Cholesterol Foundation showed that children of overweight mothers are more likely to be overweight.
