Soldier killed as Pakistan troops resume shelling on LoC

After a brief lull, tension gripped the borders again on Monday when a junior commissioned officer (JCO)of the Indian Army was killed in the Pakistani firing on the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

The incident occurred a few days after the guns fell silent on the 200km International Border in Jammu division bringing much- needed relief to the people living on the border.

Naresh Vij, defence spokesman at Srinagar, told dna that the area domination petrol of the army was attacked on the LoC in Uri sector on Sunday night in which one Subedar was killed. “There was a firing on our patrol at 12.15am. One JCO was martyred in the incident,” he said.

The slain officer has been identified as Subedar Prakash Chander of 8 Kumoan regiment.

Chander hails from Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand. Sources said the killing was carried out by the Pakistani troops in an attempt to vitiate the atmosphere on the LoC in the Valley. Officially, however, the Indian Army is reluctant to call it a ceasefire violation apparently to avoid any controversy after the Keran fiasco.
