Actor Srihari, popularly known as Sher Khan in Tollywood, died on Wednesday at 5.15 pm at the Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai. The actor reportedly suffered from cirrhosis of the liver.
Srihari was shooting in Mumbai for his Bollywood debut in R.... Rajkumar. He complained of feeling ill and was taken to the hospital where he breathed his last. He was 49.
He is survived by his wife ‘Disco’ Santhi and two sons. A daughter Akshara died at the age of four months.
The actor’s body will be transported to Hyderabad early on Thursday and will be placed for public viewing at the Andhra Pradesh Film Chamber of Commerce, Jubilee Hills.
The last rites will be performed on Thursday in Bachupalli where his four-month-old daughter was laid to rest.
Expressing sadness over the death of actor Srihari, director Apoorva Lakhia told this newspaper, “I’m deeply shocked and saddened by his death. I had met him just yesterday (Tuesday) and we had lunch together and spent some time together. I really can’t believe it.”
Actor Sonu Sood tweeted, ‘Saddened n shocked to hear about Sri Hari sir’s demise. Can’t believe the humble star was shooting with us the day before (Monday) …life is so unfair.’
Srihari was born on August 15, 1964, and brought up in Balaagar in Hyderabad. He had no ties to the film industry and made it big in filmdom on his own steam. He began his career as a stuntman and then played the villain’s role in several films before emerging as the hero in the film Police.
In a career spanning over two decades, he acted in 97 films. Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana, Dhee, Don Seenu and King are among his most notable films that cemented his place in the hearts of Telugus.
He received the state’s prestigious Nandi Award for his supporting role in Nuvvostante Nenoddantana in 2005. Srihari recently played Sher Khan in the Ram Charanstarrer Toophan. His elder son Meghansh shared screen space with him in his 2010 film Bhairava. His last film was Police Game.
He ventured into politics when he joined the YSR Congress floated by Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. He quit the party after it took a stand against the bifurcation of the state. He was expected to join the Congress and to contest the 2014 general election from Kukatpally.
Telugu film personalities Mohan Babu, Suresh Babu, producer D. Ramanaidu and Chiranjeevi expressed their condolences. CM Kiran Kumar Reddy, TD chief N. Chandrababu Naidu, Congress leaders Botsa Satyanarayana and several others expressed their condolences.
