2013, the year of leading ladies in Bollywood

Bollywood is a man's world, they say. But female screen scorchers like Deepika Padukone surprised the audiences and critics with their performances this year, while others like Nimrat Kaur and Huma Qureshi impressed with their finesse in non-commercial outings.

IANS takes a look (in alphabetical order of name) at the women who impressed with their choice of roles in tinsel town in 2013:

Deepika Padukone - In 2013, Deepika scored what's a rarity for an actress in the Hindi film industry - four back-to-back hits. The success of Race 2, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express andGoliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela - each different from the other - not just proved the actress' versatility but also cemented her position in the Hindi film world, where male talent seems to have ruled the roost so far. All of her films this year made it to the Rs 100 crores club!

Divya Dutta - She is one actress, whose talent shines through brightly even in the gleam of 'stars' in any Bollywood film and even when it may be just another supporting role. Whether it was Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Zila Ghaziabad, or Lootera, Divya, in her supporting roles, turned out to be a big screen stealer.

Huma Qureshi - After an impressive debut in 2012, Huma Qureshi kept up her standards of delivering a quality performance, film after film. This year she kept the audiences entertained in a supernatural avatar in Ek Thi Daayan and as a daring explosives expert in D-Day. She even played a troubled youngster in Shorts. This one is a promising talent in tinsel town. And, yes, her unconventional looks add to her charm.

Kangana Ranaut - Sometimes it's her clothes and sometimes it's her accent, which is in the line of fire - but all said and done, Kangana Ranaut can act. Her choice of roles is often daring and different. For proof, sample her role as a mutant named Kaya in sci-fi adventure Krrish 3 or as a nautch girl in Rajjo. She also made a mark as John Abraham's love interest in Shootout at Wadala.

Nimrat Kaur - What a revelation she was in The Lunchbox! The film had a unique script and she featured in a role that not most actresses would have risked their career for, but Nimrat did and wowed. With her as-real-as-it-gets portrayal of a Mumbai-based housewife, who is lovelorn, she managed to deliver an indelible and impeccable performance alongside a giant like Irrfan Khan. She went places, literally!

Richa Chaddha - This Bholi Punjaban regaled the audiences and critics with films like Fukrey, Shortsand Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela this year. Richa's raw and riveting work has made her stand out of the crowd, earn a good press and appreciation by critics.

Shilpa Shukla - That she can have a strong presence on the big screen is a fact that she proved withChak De! India itself. With this year's B A Pass, an independent project, Shilpa played a bored fornicating housewife or more a sex guru to a young boy, essayed by Shadab Kamal. Definitely, a bold role that most wouldn't go for.

Sonam Kapoor - With films like Raanjhanaa and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Sonam proved her ease and finesse in portraying a demure desi girl as convincingly as she carries off her glamorous image at red carpet events. In Raanjhanaa, her acting prowess was lauded, while she even managed to impress in her bit role in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

Payal Rohatgi roots for beau Sangram Singh's 'Bigg Boss' victory

Actress Payal Rohatgi, whose wrestler-boyfriend Sangram Singh is one of the finalists of "Bigg Boss - Saath 7", says she wants him to get the maximum votes and win the reality show. Also, she has a New Year resolution to avoid any fights with him.

"I want everyone to vote for him and I would obviously root for my boyfriend. Please vote for him," Payal said here on the sidelines of a rehearsal for a New Year's Eve performance.

The show's finale will go on air on Colors Saturday. Sagram Singh is competing with Gauhar Khan, Tanisha Mukherjee and Ajaz Khan for the winner's trophy.

Whether he wins or not, Sangram will be happy when he comes out of the show as Payal has a special resolution for 2014 and it is totally in his favour.

"My New Year resolution is I will never fight with Sangram. I always fight with him and he patches up. But this time after living away from him for three-and-half months, I've realised that I can't live without him. So, it's better that I don't fight with him," Payal said.

Payal and Sangram met on the reality show "Survivor India" in 2011.

Since the last three months, Payal has been concentrating on Sangram's "Bigg Boss" show, now she wants to concentrate on her own career.

"Lots of things (career wise) should happen now because for the last three months I have been concentrating on Sangramji in 'Bigg Boss'. It is a very big and popular reality show, and I was more scared than he was when he was going for it."

"I have been concentrating completely on his show and now I think I should start concentrating on my career also," added the actress, who has been a part of an earlier season of "Bigg Boss".

Shahid Afridi didn't seek explanation: Ali Zafar on 'Total Siyapaa'

Actor Ali Zafar has reacted to reports that Shahid Afridi has not taken a dialogue from the forthcoming film 'Total Siyapaa' well. He says the Pakistani cricketer has not demanded any explanation.

The film's teaser shows Ali's character, a Pakistani boy trying to woo a Hindu girl with a dialogue that implies that Pakistanis are fed up with Afridi.

As an aftermath, it was reported that the allrounder had demanded an explanation for this.

The actor also requested his fans to first watch the film before forming any judgement on its dialogues.

But Ali took to Twitter Friday to clear the air about how the dialogue is harmless.

"Afridi did not demand any explanation regarding the dialogue. He is a great sportsman and great sportsmen have sportsman spirit," Ali posted on the microblogging site.

The actor also requested his fans to first watch the film before forming any judgement on its dialogues.

"Request you all to see the full film with the complete dialogues and banter between the boy girl in the film, before making any judgement," he added.

Directed by E. Niwas and written by Neeraj Pandey, 'Total Siyapaa' is a love story, and it also features Yami Gautam. The film will hit screens Jan 31, 2014.

'Dhoom 3' breaks box office collections records, this time in Pakistan

Aamir Khan's latest release 'Dhoom 3' has broken box office collections records in Pakistan in the first week of its release, with multiplexes running five shows a day to capitalise on interest in the film that also stars Katrina Kaif and Abhishek Bachchan.

In Pakistan's largest city of Karachi, Dhoom 3 box office collections from 56 screens on its opening day was around Rs 20 million. This easily broke the record set by the Pakistani film 'Waar' last month for the highest box office collections on the first day of release.

"Waar grossed Rs 11.4 million on its opening day but Dhoom 3 has surpassed that by a large margin," said Nadeem Mandviwalla, one of Pakistan's leading exhibitors and distributors.

'Dhoom 3' was released at a time when the screening of Indian movies has come under a cloud because of an order from the Lahore High Court barring the exhibition of "illegally" imported films.

The 'Dhoom 3' craze in Karachi has reached such heights that multiplexes are running the film on all their screens and having five shows a day on one screen - something unheard of in the Pakistani film industry.

"There is no doubt that 'Dhoom 3' has been a massive hit and the reason for this is clearly Aamir Khan and the pre-release publicity for the film," Mandviwalla said.

Abdul Haq, manager of Capri Cinema here, said that while Waar was released during the Eid holidays, Dhoom 3 was released on a normal weekend.

"There is great interest in the film and we are getting audiences of all ages and sexes," Haq said.

Mandviwalla said, "Dhoom 3's success comes at the end of a year during which Pakistani films have done well at the box office and have also been received well.

Mandviwalla said 2013 was a great year for exhibitors and distributors and the success of Chambeli, Main Hoon Shahid Afridi, Waar, Chennai Express and Dhoom 3 showed that Pakistani and Indian films could co-exist on screens.

"It will be interesting to see by what margin Dhoom breaks the record for the highest box office collections in Pakistan, which is held by Chennai Express with grosses of Rs 100 million."

'Bigg Boss 7': I thought I would be the runner-up, says VJ Andy

Andy who got evicted yesterday from 'BB7', was expecting to be in the second or third place if not the winner.

Andy, who got eliminated as a part of the mid-week elimination of Bigg Boss7 confesses that though he was never gunning to win, he thought he “will win the silver or bronze medal.” In fact, his elimination will come as a shock to his fans as he was among the top contenders to win the title.

“Even I did not know that I had so many well-wishers. Inside the house, you have no clue what’s happening outside,” says Andy overwhelmed by the support for him. He, however, credits host Salman Khan as his biggest support. “If not for him and his valuable advice, I would have gone mad in the house. I used to look forward to Saturdays when I could speak to him,” says Andy, who had an eventful journey in the house.

First, he had a huge fight with Armaan Kohli, where the two ended up hurting each other with their offensive barbs and later a scuffle with Kushal Tandon ended with the latter ousted. “Yes, Armaan and I said a lot of painful things to each other but as I said Salman advised me and made things all right. As for Kushal, it was completely unexpected. Both of us had a great rapport initially but once he got involved with Gauahar he went in a different way,” points out Andy.

Ask him if he regrets the incident (he gave out intimate details of Gauahar and Pratyusha Banerjee’s lingerie) that led to the fight with Kushal and Andy accepts that “it was not the right platform to do that”. He, however, clarifies that he and Gauahar have known each other for seven years and being a stylist he has discussed about lingerie and body parts with her in the house several times. “At that point, I thought it was a light-hearted comment, but when I realised that I had stepped out of range, I stopped. Kushal’s reaction took me by surprise because it was not immediate. I made the comments in the morning and he manhandled me in the evening, which was unneccesary,” he points out. He is bewildered at the relationship between Kushal and Gauahar. “I am nobody to judge, but I find Kushal immature in a lot of ways. He needs to grow up.
On the other hand, since I have known Gauahar and the kind of person she is, I don’t understand their relationship or them being together,” says Andy.

He, however, sees a strong connection between Tanishaa and Armaan and hopes Tanishaa will win. “Tanishaa and me were the jallad jodi and in the last three weeks, we started bonding again.
She has been through a lot like me, so I want her to win,” says Andy. His other deep friendship with Sangram Singh saw some cracks after Rajat Sharma came into the house and showed the clip when Kushal was taking on Andy. “I was shocked to see Sangram just standing there not doing anything to help me. Later, I felt he must have had his own reasons for it,” he observes.
Though they seemed to have made up, Andy left the house after a spat with him! And yet, if not Tanishaa, Andy would love Sangram to win.

Anil Kapoor’s 24 Season 2 On The Roll!

Anil Kapoor is on cloud nine as he has had an eventful 2013. The year began with a super hit Race 2 that entered the 100 crore club, followed by Shootout at Wadala to his Hollywood debut with Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol and last but not the least the American version of 24 on Colors.

“This year I learnt some more self discipline. I learnt to eat well, exercise properly and think only positively. I also learnt to be patient. That has helped me in finding my bearings even better in life. Work-wise, besides 24, Race 2 and Shootout at Wadala were successful. Race 2, I feel could have been a much bigger hit. I hope the team works more hard on Race 3. Also I would like to thank the film industry and to my fans for having me around for thirty years. Time has just flown by. Today, I feel I am just starting out,” said an ecstatic Anil Kapoor

The coming year 2014 also looked jam-packed. 2014 would be taken up with Anees Bazmee’s Welcome Back and No Entry Mein Entry followed by Zoya Akhtar’s film. Also, he is also looking at making frequent trips to Los Angeles to pursue his career.

Now if this was not enough, Anil Kapoor is also optimistic to start the second season of 24 and he is looking forward to setting the second season in Dubai.

The Indian remake of the American TV show consists of a day in the life of the special agent as he strives to solve a criminal conspiracy, with each episode chronicling an hour of drama filmed in real time.

“Yes, we will bring 24 to Dubai very soon. Dubai is very cinema friendly. There is a lot of security, great locations, cars and roads, that is why so many people come to film here,” stated Anil Kapoor who is very optimistic to bring back the series soon.

The original US version of 24 starred Kiefer Sutherland as Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU) agent Jack Bauer. Anil Kapoor acquired the rights from US Fox network to remake the Indian version in 2011 and it made its debut on Colors on October 04, 2013.

“You never know with life. No matter how much you plan, something unexpected comes up,” said Anil Kapoor who is looking forward for a brighter 2014.

Dhoom 3 continues record run at box office

Dhoom 3 continued with its record-breaking streak at the box office with overall collections nudging closer to the Rs. 250 crore mark.

According to estimates, the Aamir Khan action thriller has pulled in Rs. 233.57 crore in just five days of its release.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh in a tweet said, "Here's Fri to Tue total of Dhoom3: India Rs. 149.46 cr + Overseas Rs. 84.11 cr [$ 3.11 mn +]. Worldwide total:Rs. 233.57 cr. BLOCKBUSTER!"

The third instalment of Dhoom franchise, directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, is expected to continue its strong performance due to the New Year holidays.

According to industry estimates Dhoom 3 is expected to cross the Rs.300 crore mark at the box office. And its success will be a big boost for the multiplex operators.

Pramod Arora, president & CEO of PVR, said, "I think Dhoom 3 may enter into the Rs. 300 crore club which is being spoken in the industry and the fraternity. And this is unprecedented."

He added: "This has never happened before but most likely it seems that Dhoom 3 is going to turn the fortunes around for most of the multiplex operators across the country, including us."

In just five days, Dhoom 3 has already turned out to be highest Bollywood grosser in some overseas markets like Australia and New Zealand.

According to reports, Dhoom: 3 has broken box office records in Pakistan in the first week of its release, with multiplexes running five shows a day to capitalise on interest in the film. (With Agency inputs)

Aamir Khan or Shah Rukh Khan- Who impressed you the most?

Considering the fact that Salman Khan had no big screen release this year, the onus of keeping the Box Office cash registers ringing, was left on his contemporaries-Aamir and Shah Rukh.

Shah Rukh teamed up with super-hit filmmaker Rohit Shetty to deliver a blockbuster- ‘Chennai Express’- which had Deepika Padukone playing his ladylove.

The film went on to become a roaring success and raked in the moolah in India and overseas.

With ‘Talaash’ failing to create ripples last year, Aamir had to reclaim his spot in the Box Office and ‘Dhoom 3’ did exactly what Mr Perfectionist would have expected.

Aamir returned with a bang. Yash Raj Films’ ‘Dhoom 3’ which also features Abhishek Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Uday Chopra, has garnered appreciation from various corners. The film is a massive hit and continues to do brisk business this holiday season.

So who according to you stole the thunder- Aamir or Shah Rukh?

Bigg Boss 7: Gauahar, Tanishaa's confession and fight

The final five contestants – Gauahar, Ajaz, Sangram, Andy and Tanishaa – of controversial celebrity game show 'Bigg Boss 7' were in for a night of confessions.

This time instead of the confession room of Bigg Boss' house the contestants came out with their confessions in the open. The housemates openly spoke their heart out, revealing good, bad and ugly.

Bigg Boss asked the housemates to indulge in a tête-à-tête and confess whatever they have spoken about their fellow-contestants behind their backs.

In the evening, Gauahar, Ajaz, Sangram, Andy and Tanishaa gather in the living area and spill the beans about each other. Andy is the first one to go and he tells Gauahar that he has never liked Kushal and has always doubted their future. He also tells Tanishaa that he did not appreciate her picking a fight with him and blowing things out of proportion. Ajaz tells Tanishaa that he did not appreciate Tanishaa's cold behaviour and always complained about it to Sangram.

Making most of this opportunity, Ajaz tries to mend his friendship with Gauahar and tells her that he considers her to be a dear friend. Sangram Singh being at his diplomatic best tells Gauahar that he did talk about her being a player and influencing people but has never had hard feelings for her.

Gauahar and Tanishaa's confessions, however leads to a fight between the two where they accuse each other of holding back a lot of things that they have spoken about each other.

With a lot of dark secrets being revealed in this session, what new twists will it bring in the finale week of Bigg Boss?

Anil Kapoor doesn't want to play Sonam's dad

Sonam Kapoor’s doting dad, actor Anil Kapoor, has often openly admired his daughter’s acting skills. Now the 57-year-old wants to share the screen space with Sonam, however, not as her father. “We keep getting a lot of offers but nothing great has come our way. We really want to work together in a film but I don’t want to play her dad... I mean, won’t that be really boring?” asks the actor, adding, that he’s looking for something more interesting.

“It should be something very dramatic. If I end up playing the obvious role (of her dad), then what new are we offering to the audience?” he says.

The actor is also co-producing the remake of the 1980 Hrishikesh Mukherjee hit, Khoobsoorat, with Sonam in the lead. “I think Sonam would do a great job with that role. I am really looking forward to seeing her in that role. she is a brilliant actor,” says Anil, who has acted in over 100 films, including Hollywood flicks such as the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionnaire (2009), and Mission Impossible — Ghost Protocol (2011).

It's unfair to be judgemental: Aishwarya on failed B'wood relationships

In the backdrop of crumbling marriages in Bollywood, actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan feels that its unfair to limit and judge relationships. "I don't think it is fair to get judgemental and limit relationships or strengths or inability to hold themselves or limit it to showbiz. What happens in society is each to his own. What would be fair and respectful is belief in people to allow them to live their lives and finding strength in choices they make," the actress said in response to a query on effects of showbiz on marital life.

Recently, Hrithik Roshan and his wife of 13-years Sussanne decided to separate. Also, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and actress wife Kalki Koechlin are taking time off their marriage.

Aishwarya was speaking at the launch of L'Oreal Paris, Kajal Magique, here yesterday.

‘Queen’ trailer: Kangana Ranaut's journey to her honeymoon!

After failing to woo the audiences in her last film, ‘Rajjo’, Kangana Ranaut is back with a promising movie called ‘Queen’, in which she is playing a Delhi bred girl called Rani aka Queen.

The trailer of the film shows Rani preparing for her “pehli shaadi”, and most importantly, her “pehla honeymoon” with her husband, in Amsterdam and Paris. What is even more interesting is the fact that Rani goes all the way to these “phoren” cities for her honeymoon. But her plans go haywire the moment she lands in the new country. That’s how Queen’s journey starts. Supermodel Lisa Haydon is also playing a supporting role in the film. Rajkumar Yadav, who was last seen in ‘Kai Po Che!’ and ‘Shahid’, is playing Kangana’s beloved.

Kangana’s antics as Rani look very interesting. She has even adopted the typical West Delhi accent to make her character look real. Have a look at the trailer and tell us what you feel.

Actor Sanjay Dutt out of Yerawada jail on parole

Actor Sanjay Dutt was released from Pune's Yerawada Central Jail on Saturday, two weeks after he was granted parole for 30 days to take care of his ailing wife Manyata.

Dutt is serving the remaining part of his five-year imprisonment for conviction of an offence under the Arms Act, in relation to the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts.

The Pune divisional commissioner Prabhakar Deshmukh had granted the parole on December 6. The decision caused a controversy as Dutt had availed 15 days furlough on October 1, which was extended by another 15 days. Dutt had returned to jail on October 30.

Dutt took 15 days to execute the sureties which were required as a matter of condition for his release. State home minister RR Patil and other higher-ups in the home department were at the receiving end of a flurry of questions regarding the grant of parole. However, the questions were put to rest when the doctors attending to Dutt's wife made a public statement about the status of her ailment.

Yerawada jail superintendent Yogesh Desai told TOI on Saturday that Dutt's brother-in-law and actor Kumar Gaurav executed the surety on behalf of Dutt. "The actor was released on completion of legal formalities at around 10.15am," Desai said.

"Dutt's parole period commences from December 22 considering that the time taken for travel to his residence is excluded as per the parole norms," he added. Jail officials said that soon after completing the legal formalities Dutt left for Mumbai along with his relatives.

Tanishaa is a lovely girl, lucky to have her by my side: Armaan Kohli

Unlike the image of the volatile angry temper-tantrum prone 'Bigg Boss' inmate that Armaan Kohli has created on the show, in person, he comes across as polite, cultured and articulate. Now out of the show, he says the eviction at this penultimate moment has not disappointed him.

"For me it is like winning even when I haven't won technically. I've come away from 'Bigg Boss' far more patient and far more humane than I was before I entered the House. And of course I've made a life-long friend in Tanissha."

Armaan's relationship with Tanissha within the Bigg Boss house is the talk of the nation.

Armaan's relationship with Tanissha within the Bigg Boss house is the talk of the nation.

Says Armaan a little bashfully: "I don't know how the public saw us. But we were very close to one another. She is a lovely girl. And I was very lucky to have her with me in the Bigg Boss house. She helped to keep me sane in a situation where I was constantly being taunted provoked and pushed against the wall."

Armaan says he doesn't know how he came across in the public eye. "It wasn't as if I was constantly losing my temper, screaming, throwing a fit all the time. There were so many occasions during these 97 days when I sang, danced, played games and had fun."

Tannissha, says Armaan, anchored him in the house.

Speaking of her with affection, he says: "For me there was only the wall. I was constantly being pushed against it. There were 13-14 contestants who were constantly doing and saying things that went against my way of thinking and behaving. The stress levels were really high.

"You have to understand the Bigg Boss house is not a normal place to be in. In real life when you see conflict stress or confrontation, you walk away. In the Bigg Boss house I didn't have the luxury or the option to walk away.

"I had to stay despite the pressures. I am not the kind of person who can stand nonsense. If you talk politely to me, I do the same. If you are rude to me, I'll reciprocate with the same. If it wasn't for Tanissha, I'd have probably lost my head. She kept me grounded. When the lights were out, we discussed all the tensions of the day."

Asked if there is a future to their relationship beyond "Bigg Boss", Armaan doesn't deny his desire for durability for the duo.

"Like I said, she is my friend for life. If you're asking about the future of my relationship with her, I can only say, there are two well-known film families who are involved. I wouldn't want to say anything that would embarrass Tanissha's mummy or my papa and mummy."

Armaan is surprisingly candid on the issue of Sofia Hayat who has filed a case against him for violence in the Bigg Boss house.

Says Armaan, "This is just an issue being made out of a tissue. That's not the way I've been brought up. To hurt a woman in any way is not acceptable to my family values. And you tell me, is it possible for anybody to get violent within the Bigg Boss house?

"It is written on the contract that no contestant is allowed physical contact. You raise a finger in there, and there's hell to pay.If you see the footage you'll know the truth. I don't know why Sofiaji is doing what she is. But I wish her all the best in life. No hard feelings."

Says Armaan, "I've come away with only positive feelings from Bigg Boss. Now I just want to meet my parents. I can't wait to hug them."
